Applied to clean, sectioned, damp hair and left to sit, it loosens enough for you to work through a section without fighting it, and holds that softness through drying so shrinkage does not arrive as a knot. On very dense hair, cover with a cap and give it longer than the instructions suggest.

Application tips
Work in six sections rather than four if your hair is dense. Tight coils hide dry patches, and a patch you missed is a knot later.
Apply from the tips upward until a section looks and feels evenly loaded, twist it loosely and pin it. Fifteen to twenty minutes under a cap. Then unpin one section at a time and finger-separate before rinsing, so the softness gets used while it is there.
Results
Softness is what you notice first, and it is what makes everything after it possible. A section that fought you now separates under your fingers.
Coils come apart cleanly, hold that state through drying, and shrink up without locking together at the roots. Hair feels cushioned rather than slick. On 4c textures the detangling stage gets shorter by a useful margin.
