The gel version of Sof n Free's activator holds more than the lotion does. Same idea, drawing moisture in and letting the curl form, but with enough structure that waves and looser curls keep a defined shape instead of dropping out by mid-morning.
That is what makes it the better pick for 2a through 3c hair. Loose patterns need something to hold the clump together, and a lotion on its own often is not enough.
Apply to wet hair in sections, rake it through, then scrunch or leave it depending on how much volume you want. It dries with a light cast that breaks out under your fingers once the hair is completely dry.

Application tips
Work on soaking wet hair with your hands, not a comb. Take a palmful, rake it down one section at a time from root to tip, then cup and squeeze upward and leave it be.
Diffuse on low with the bowl held still, or let it dry in the air. Going onto a dry head, damp each section down before you start, otherwise most of it never reaches the strand. Break the cast with oiled palms once it is bone dry.
Results
Hold is the difference. A lotion lets a looser curl fall flat before lunch; this one keeps the clump locked, so 2a to 3c patterns still have shape at four o'clock.
The cast is light and crumbles under your fingers rather than needing a brush through it. Beneath that, the hair stays soft rather than stiff. Definition reads sharper on wavier textures, the ones that usually get least from a lotion on its own.
