Hairfood is the old grease format: a thick balm you part the hair to reach rather than a lotion you pour. It is meant for the scalp instead of the lengths, and a pea-sized scoop covers far more ground than it looks like it will.

Petrolatum and liquid paraffin form the barrier that keeps everything sitting on the scalp instead of evaporating off it. Sulfur and salicylic acid work on flakes and lift dead skin from the surface. Menthol and camphor give the cooling hit you feel straight away, and black castor seed oil and lanolin do the conditioning.

Because it is heavy, twice or three times a week is a better rhythm than daily. Massage it into the parts that feel driest, leave it in and style as normal. Suits any hair type and any scalp that goes flaky between washes. 250 ml / 8.45 oz.

Application tips

Work on a dry, clean scalp. Part the hair in rows about an inch apart, take a small scoop on a fingertip and press it along each part, then rub it in with the pads of your fingers until you cannot feel it sitting there.

Twice a week suits most scalps, three times if it runs very dry. Keep it out of the lengths, and do not add more because the first lot has not disappeared. It is meant to stay put.

Results

The cooling arrives first and holds for a few minutes, which is the part people notice. Under that, the balm sits on the skin and slows how quickly it dries out between washes, so the tight, drawn feeling settles.

Loose flakes lift away with brushing instead of collecting along the parting. Hair near the root picks up shine from the oils and feels less brittle where it had been snapping off short.

Composition

Black Castor Seed Oil
Conditions the scalp and gives the balm the weight to stay put
Salicylic Acid
Loosens surface build-up so flakes brush out rather than sitting on the parting
Menthol
Delivers the cold, fresh sensation you feel the moment it goes on
Lanolin
Softens the skin and keeps the balm pliable rather than waxy
