A custard sits between a cream and a gel, and that is the useful bit. More definition than a cream gives you, less stiffness than a gel leaves behind.

The texture is soft and velvety, so it moves through damp hair without dragging, coats each section evenly, and does not pill on hair that already has a leave-in on it. Layering is where custards usually fail, and this one does not.

  • 24 hour curl definition, so day two still looks intentional
  • Softens the hair and keeps frizz down in damp weather
  • Moisturises without weighing curls flat
  • Sulfate-free, and it layers cleanly under a gel or an oil

Apply on damp hair in sections, rake it through, then scrunch and leave it to dry. Best on curls and coils that hold a shape well but frizz at the surface, roughly type 3b through type 4c. The 8.5 oz size is a sensible middle step for anyone whose cream alone is not quite doing enough.

Application tips

Custard likes a wet canvas, so keep the hair dripping rather than damp. Take it through in four sections, raking down first to coat, then smoothing each section flat between two palms before you scrunch upwards.

Squeeze the excess out in a cotton tee. Air dry or diffuse. Do not touch the hair until every section is completely dry.

Results

The pattern holds through a second day, which is where a custard earns its keep over a cream. Hair feels soft under the definition instead of coated, and there is no cast to break because there was never much of one.

Frizz stays flat through damp weather. On dense coils the clumps stay separate rather than merging into a sheet.
