Jamaican black castor oil has a reputation for being heavy, and that is the usual reason it gets blended. Pairing it with rosemary and three lighter oils keeps the richness for the ends while leaving the scalp application manageable.

Jojoba balances things at the scalp, argan adds shine, and sweet almond oil thins the blend so it spreads. Vitamin E completes a short list with no parabens or sulfates in it.

What it does

  • Combines Jamaican black castor oil with rosemary leaf oil in one blend
  • Conditions dry, damaged ends
  • Moisturises a dry, itchy or flaky scalp
  • Adds shine and softness to dull hair
  • Works as a hot oil treatment as well as a pre-wash

How to use it

For the scalp, apply five to ten drops to clean skin and massage in circles for five to ten minutes. For the lengths, warm one to three drops in your palms and work through, concentrating on dry ends. Leave for thirty minutes before washing, or overnight for a deeper treatment. For a hot oil version, stand the bottle in a bowl of hot water rather than the microwave, then apply and cover with a warm towel for twenty to thirty minutes.

Suits every hair type, including sensitive scalps. 100ml bottle.

Application tips

Run the bottle under a hot tap for a minute and it becomes a hot oil treatment without any extra equipment.

Apply to dry hair before washing rather than after, since the shampoo will lift whatever excess is left. Twice a week is a sensible ceiling. If you wear a protective style, use the nozzle to reach the scalp between braids and skip the lengths entirely.

Results

Two textures in one bottle. The castor gives it enough weight to hold on dry ends and the almond and jojoba keep the scalp application from feeling like syrup.

Dry, tight skin around the parting settles, and the rosemary leaves a herbal smell that fades before the hair dries. Dull lengths pick up shine within a couple of treatments. A hundred millilitres lasts a season.
