Batana oil comes from the American oil palm and has been used on hair in Honduras for a very long time. The current wave of interest in it is much newer than the ingredient. This is a 500ml sulphate-free shampoo built around it.

The cleansing agents are sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate and cocamidopropyl betaine, both mild, which is why the wash feels soft rather than squeaky. Glycerin draws in moisture and panthenol adds slip. Batana oil itself does the conditioning, aimed at hair that has gone brittle and frizzy from colour, heat or simple neglect.

  • Sulphate-free, so the wash stays gentle on dry and damaged lengths
  • Glycerin and panthenol for moisture and combability
  • Suits all hair types, including coloured and heat-styled

Wet the hair with warm water, apply generously, massage in circles to build the lather, then rinse. The matching Batana Oil Conditioner is designed to follow it.

Application tips

Less than you expect will do it. A sulphate-free base lathers thinly, and piling on more product does not change that, it only costs you rinsing time.

Emulsify it in wet palms before it touches the head, then set it down at the scalp in three or four places and spread out from there. The lengths only need what runs off. Rinse until the hair feels clean rather than slick.

Results

The scalp comes up clean without the tight, stripped feeling a harsh wash leaves, so the roots do not overcompensate with oil two days later.

Brittle lengths stay soft through the wash instead of tangling the moment they are wet. Frizz is lower from the point the hair dries. Used several times a week it holds up, since nothing in the cleanse leaves dry hair drier each time.
