It is a heavy emollient, so a shampoo built around it deposits moisture during the wash rather than relying on whatever the conditioner manages afterwards. Dry strands come out softer, and the roughness that makes damaged hair catch on itself settles down.
Use it as your regular wash if dryness is the main problem you are solving. Massage into wet hair, work up a lather through to the ends, rinse thoroughly, then follow with a conditioner. If your hair is dry only in patches, keep this to the lengths and use something lighter at the roots. It is a rich formula and it will show on fine hair.

Application tips
Two passes work better than one long scrub on dry hair. The first lifts the oil and product, the second actually cleans the scalp.
Keep both passes short and concentrate at the roots. Rinse between them. Never pile it onto the ends, which are the driest part of the head and get quite clean enough from the run-off.
Results
No squeak at the end of the rinse, and the hair stays pliable while wet rather than going stiff and grabby.
Shea butter puts back enough of what the cleansers take that the conditioner afterwards is topping up rather than rescuing. Over-processed lengths look less faded and dusty after a few washes. It is a creamy wash with a moderate lather.
