Parachute is the blue bottle that has sat in South Asian bathrooms for generations, and the reason it has lasted is that nothing has been added to it. No added fragrance, no preservatives, no chemistry beyond the coconut itself.

Used the traditional way it is a pre-wash oil. You work it into the scalp and lengths, leave it on for an hour or overnight, then shampoo it out. Done regularly, that habit is what stops hair going brittle in the first place, which beats trying to repair the damage afterwards. It is also the cheapest step in any routine, which is probably why it has outlived most of the products that were meant to replace it.

Bear in mind that pure coconut oil sets solid below about room temperature. Rub what you need between your palms first, or stand the bottle in warm water for a minute, and it pours and spreads properly.

  • Conditions dry, dull hair and restores softness
  • Reduces breakage and the split ends that come with it
  • Tames frizz and flyaways on hair that will not lie flat
  • Doubles as a body and scalp oil

Suits every texture from loose waves to tight coils, and the 500ml size is worth it if oiling is a weekly habit rather than an occasional one.

Application tips

Do this on dry hair, before you wet anything. Divide into four, work along each parting with oiled fingertips until the whole scalp is covered, then drag what remains down to the ends, where the hair is oldest.

Plait it or pin it up and put an old towel over the pillow. Two lathers of shampoo will clear it and one usually will not. For ends alone, a smear on damp lengths after washing does the job.

Results

Brittle hair comes back softer and more pliable, and the difference is easiest to feel across the last few inches.

Combing gets quieter, with fewer of those small snapping sounds that mean length is going. Skin at the roots feels less tight after a wash. The natural coconut smell fades as the hair dries, and since nothing perfumed has been added, it will not fight whatever you use next.
