8 oz is the jar to start on. Protein treatments are not universally welcome, and hair that is already protein-heavy will feel stiff and straw-like after one, which is an expensive thing to discover on a large tub.
The formula is built on egg protein, olive oil, wheat germ oil and a blend of hair-nourishing herbs. The protein firms up strands that have gone soft and weak, and the oils are in there so the hair does not end up brittle in exchange. It moisturises, strengthens and brings shine back to hair that has gone flat and dull.
The obvious moment for it is after taking out braids or extensions, where hair has been under tension for weeks and comes down fragile. Over-processing and heat damage are the other two.
Apply a small amount to wet hair, comb it through so it lands evenly, cover with a plastic cap and process under a warm dryer for 15 minutes. Rinse and towel dry, then follow with a moisturising conditioner, because protein on its own leaves hair firm rather than soft. Every few weeks is plenty for most people.

Application tips
Think of it as a treatment rather than a conditioner, which means time on the hair and heat if you can manage it. Apply to hair that has been washed and squeezed out, cover with a cap, and leave it fifteen minutes somewhere warm.
Comb it through before the cap goes on. Rinse until the water runs clear, then finish with cool water.
Results
Hair that has gone soft and stretchy from bleach or relaxer comes back with some backbone, and the difference is noticeable from the first treatment.
Ends look less frayed and the hair holds a blow-dry. An 8oz tub covers three or four treatments on mid-length hair, which is enough to see whether protein is what yours has been short of. Follow with moisture either way.
