Purple sits opposite yellow on the colour wheel, and that is the whole mechanism behind a toning shampoo. The violet pigment in No.4P deposits on the hair as you wash and cancels the warm tones that creep into blonde, lightened and grey hair between salon visits.

What separates this one from a standard purple shampoo is the bond-building technology underneath. Lightened hair is structurally weaker, so a toning wash that only deposits pigment is dealing with half the problem. This one works on the disulphide bonds at the same time as it tones, in a 250 ml bottle.

Leave it on longer for more correction and rinse sooner for less. Grey and white hair usually needs less time than freshly bleached blonde, so start short and build up.

Application tips

Timing does the toning here, so decide before you start. A minute or two evens out warmth; longer pushes it cooler. Wet the hair, spread the lather from roots through to ends so the tone lands evenly, and keep an eye on porous sections, which grab pigment fastest.

Rinse well and condition after. Alternate with your usual shampoo rather than using it at every wash.

Results

Yellow and orange settle down and the blonde reads cooler and cleaner rather than tinted. On grey and silver hair the effect is brighter still, since there is less warmth underneath to fight.

Overuse shows as a lilac cast on very light or porous hair, which fades out with a normal wash or two. Used with some restraint it keeps a salon tone going for weeks.
