If you use a lot of product between washes, the shampoo has to earn its place. Butters, gels and oils build up on the scalp faster than most people expect, and a gentle cleanser will not always shift it.
Mielle's Mongongo Oil Exfoliating Shampoo is sulphate-free but built to clear that layer, lifting dirt, oil and residue off the scalp while leaving the hair's own moisture where it is.

Use a coin-sized amount, massage into the scalp with your fingertips rather than your nails, lather, and rinse. Repeat if it is not properly clean the first time. Follow with the Mongongo Oil Protein-Free Hydrating Conditioner, or your own. Type 2a through 3c. 8oz.

Application tips
Once every two or three weeks suits most people, more often if you are heavy handed with butters. Divide long or thick hair into four first so the water reaches the scalp everywhere.
The first lather lifts the surface, the second does the actual cleaning. Give the rinse longer than feels necessary, particularly at the nape where residue collects.
Results
The scalp feels genuinely clear afterwards, without the tight, stripped feeling a strong clarifier leaves. Product that had built into a film comes away, so curls spring instead of clumping and the roots lift.
Hair still has slip after the second lather. Stylers behave on the next wash day the way they did when the bottle was new.
