Most of the damage a rubber band does happens on the way out, not while it is in. A band with a rough surface grips the hair as you pull it off and takes some of it with it. These have a smooth finish so they slide rather than drag, which is the difference between taking a style down cleanly and finding hair on the floor.
They hold their stretch as well. A band that has gone slack after a week is a band you have to double, and doubling is what starts pulling at the ends of a braid. One band at the right tension does less damage than two tired ones.

Application tips
Wrap rather than stretch. Take the band round the section two or three times, keeping each loop flat against the last, and stop before the hair starts to bunch.
On braid ends, two turns usually holds. To take one off, cut it with the tip of a pair of scissors and open the fold so it falls away clean, rather than dragging it down over the hair.
Results
Ends stay closed and sections stay divided while you work, so a braid finishes without a lump at the tip.
Cut them off and they release cleanly, leaving the ends intact. They come in a multi-pack in black, which disappears into dark hair and saves hunting for a matching colour. Fine waves and tight coils both hold at the same tension.
