Waves are trained by compression. Brushing lays the hair down in a direction, and a durag holds it in that direction for the hours afterwards while it sets. Without the holding stage, most of the brushing is wasted.
This is a tie down durag with adjustable ties, so you set the tension yourself rather than accepting whatever a fixed band gives you. Enough compression to hold the pattern, not so much that it is uncomfortable to sleep in. The long ties wrap and knot at the back, and the fabric panel covers the crown fully.

Application tips
Comb or brush the hair down in the direction you want it to lie, then lay the panel over the crown with the seam sitting centrally. Cross the ties behind your head, bring them round the forehead, take them back again and knot them low at the nape.
Half an hour after a brushing session is enough for a daily set. Overnight is better. If it leaves a mark across your forehead, you have pulled the ties too far.
Results
Compression is what holds the work in. Hair that has been laid down stays laid down while it sets, so each session builds on the last one instead of starting over.
Away from the wave routine it does duller but useful jobs: keeping lint out of locs, stopping a fresh set of twists roughing up on a pillow, and holding a daytime style neat between the house and wherever you are going.
