Wet the hair, work the shampoo into the scalp, then let the lather run down the lengths rather than scrubbing them. Rinse, and repeat only if the hair was heavily coated. Follow with a conditioner while the hair is still soaking.

Application tips
Diluting it in a squeeze bottle with a little water makes it far easier to reach the scalp of dense hair, and you will use less.
Focus everything at the roots and let gravity handle the rest. Fingertips, not nails. Give it a minute of proper massage before rinsing, and keep the water warm, not hot, so the curls do not swell and knot.
Results
The scalp feels properly clean, and the lengths stay soft enough to finger detangle before conditioner. There is no tight, creaking stage.
Curls stay springy while wet and do not clump into rope, and the shine that follows a wash lasts instead of disappearing as the hair dries. Heavily coated hair may want a second round.
