Spread it through the hair with your fingers, massage gently, leave it for about thirty minutes, then wash thoroughly with shampoo. Once or twice a week is the usual routine. In hot climates the traditional method skips the wash entirely and the oil is simply massaged in before combing, which tells you something about how long people have been using it this way.
Mustard oil is heavy and it warms the skin, and that warmth is why it works as a scalp and body massage oil rather than a finishing oil. The heat is noticeable and the smell is pungent. Neither is a fault. It is what the oil is.
It is also used for the care of dry skin, so the 250ml bottle covers more than hair. Suits type 2a through 4a. If you have never used mustard oil before, try a small area first, because the warming effect catches some people out.

Application tips
Pour a little into a bowl first, because the bottle runs faster than you expect. Fingers into the scalp, small circles, then draw whatever is left down the lengths. Half an hour under a cap is plenty before you wash it out, and one wash rarely does it, so plan on two.
New to it? Patch a section behind your ear and give it a day.
Results
The warmth arrives within a minute or two and stays there, which is the character of this oil and the reason it gets used for body massage as much as hair. Skin gone dry and tight loosens up under it.
Hair is left heavily conditioned rather than lightly dressed, so it belongs in the wash day slot and not the finishing one. The smell is sharp and it does not apologise for itself.
