1st Lather is the first shampoo in a two shampoo wash, and it does the dirty work. Its job is stripping out what has accumulated: sebum, dirt from the air, gel and hairspray residue, whatever is left of last week's wax stick.
That makes it the wrong shampoo for every wash and the right one for the wash where your hair has stopped responding to product. Buildup is the usual reason a leave in that used to work suddenly does nothing.

Application tips
Two washes, and the order is the whole point. This one goes first, on soaking wet hair, massaged into the scalp for a minute and rinsed out. A moisturising shampoo follows it, or head directly into a deep conditioner if your hair runs dry.
Little bottle, monthly job. Use it weekly and your hair will tell you, and what it will say is dry.
Results
Buildup is invisible until it is gone. Hair that had turned limp and dull lifts at the root again, and product you had given up on starts behaving the way it did when you first bought it.
The lather rinses away without leaving anything of its own behind. Expect the hair to feel bare and slightly rough straight afterwards. That is the step working, and conditioner sorts it.
