A proper conditioner left on for a couple of minutes softens the hair enough that knots come apart under your fingers before a comb goes near them. Application tips
Be generous. A 399ml bottle is meant to be used properly rather than rationed, and thin coverage is why conditioner sometimes seems to do nothing.
Coat every section from the ears down, comb it through with a wide tooth comb while the hair is still slippery, then clip it up and give it two or three minutes. Rinse under cool water at the end.
Results
Knots loosen while the conditioner is still on, so most of the detangling happens in the bath rather than afterwards on a squirming child.
Hair rinses clean and light, with no coating left to flatten the curl pattern. Fine young hair comes out softer without going limp, and there is far less tugging needed to get through it with a comb.
