Sunshine Oil is the lighter one in the Jahaitian range.

Where the black castor oil is thick and slow, this blend of natural oils spreads easily and absorbs at a normal speed, which makes it a daily oil rather than a weekly treatment. It conditions the scalp, eases the dry and flaky feel, and leaves the lengths soft instead of coated.

The 237ml/8.01 oz bottle is large enough to use across a whole head without thinking about it. Work it into the scalp in sections, then take what is left through the mid-lengths and ends. On a wash and go it adds shine. Under a twist out it keeps the hair pliable overnight, which is the difference between a set that holds its shape and one that has frizzed by morning.

Tagged for type 2a to 3c, and for anyone whose scalp dries out between washes.

Application tips

Straight onto the scalp, in rows, a few drops per parting rather than a stripe. Rub it in with the pads of the fingers, then pull whatever is left down through the hair.

It sinks in fast enough to use in the morning before work. On a twist out, put it on the night before rather than the morning after, so the hair is pliable when you unravel it.

Results

A scalp that flakes and tightens between washes feels settled within a day or two of regular use. Lengths come out soft and moving rather than slicked down, which is the advantage of a thinner oil.

A wash and go picks up a level of shine from it. Overnight in twists it stops the set going brittle, so the pattern survives unravelling instead of frizzing.
