Five inches is small even by detail scissor standards, and that is exactly what it is for.

The 361-50 handles close work. Fringes, around the ears, texture inside a shape, the fiddly parts where a longer blade cannot see what it is doing. Blades are hand honed in Japanese steel, so the cut stays clean at the tip as well as at the pivot, and the tip is where cheaper short scissors give themselves away.

Barbers doing detail and stylists working on children's hair tend to keep a pair this size within reach. It is a second pair rather than a first.

The other use for a pair this short is anything that has to happen quickly on someone who will not sit still. Children's fringes, mostly. A small blade lets you work close to the skin with the tips in view rather than guessing at them.

Application tips

Small blades are for small work, so change how you hold the section. Pinch it close to where the cut lands rather than out at the ends, and take shallow bites.

Point cutting into a fringe wants the tips only, opened a centimetre at most. Five inch pairs live in a top pocket, and that is exactly how the tips get chipped, so use the case.

Results

Control at close range.

Five inches puts the tips near your fingers, which is what you want for a fringe, a beard line, or texture around the front hairline where a longer blade overcommits.

Japanese steel keeps the edge fine enough that ends come off cleanly rather than folded. Light in the hand, so precision work does not turn into a wrestling match.
