Castor oil is the first thing most people reach for when their ends start snapping.

Difeel press theirs from castor seed and bottle it at 75ml/2.54 oz, which suits an oil you only ever use a few drops of. It is heavy and slow to absorb, and that is exactly what makes it worth having. Castor oil coats the hair shaft, seals moisture in over a leave in, and gives the lengths enough slip that combing does less damage on the way through. On the scalp it eases the tight, dry feeling that turns up a few days after a wash. The trade off is weight. Fine hair will notice it, and a heavy hand shows.

  • Sealing damp hair after a leave in or a cream
  • Smoothing and weighting down ends that keep breaking
  • A scalp massage oil for the night before wash day
  • Supporting length retention by keeping breakage down

Warm a few drops between your palms before you start, because cold castor oil drags and pulls at the hair rather than sliding through it. Two or three sessions a week is plenty on the scalp, and once a week is enough on the ends if you are sealing over a cream. Best on type 3b through 4c, and on anyone who finds lighter oils vanish within the hour.

Application tips

Layer it, do not lead with it. Castor works best over something water-based, so put a leave-in or a curl cream on first and seal with two or three drops on top. Press rather than rake.

On the scalp, part in rows and apply straight to the skin with the nozzle, then massage with fingertips. Wash day is the only sensible time for a scalp application this heavy.

Results

Moisture stays in the hair for days rather than hours, which is the whole reason for sealing. Ends feel padded instead of exposed, and they stop shredding on a hair tie.

The oil leaves a deep, wet-looking shine that suits coily textures and can overwhelm fine ones. Combing gets easier because the strand has slip on it, and less breakage is how length gets held.
