The order matters more than the quantities. Shampoo, then conditioner, then cream applied from mid-length to ends and scrunched upward, then a small amount of gel raked through while the hair is still properly wet. Gel on damp hair sets a cast; gel on dry hair sits on top and flakes.
Four steps sounds like a lot until you time it. The shampoo and conditioner were happening anyway, and the cream and gel add a couple of minutes between them.

Application tips
Timing is the part the box does not tell you. Conditioner wants two to three minutes in, not thirty seconds, and it should be combed through before it is rinsed.
Cream goes on to hair that is still dripping. Gel follows within a minute or two, before anything has begun to dry, otherwise it sits on top of the cream instead of setting through it. Then hands off until dry.
Results
The four steps stack rather than compete. Hair is soft out of the shower, defined by the time it is damp, and holding a shape by the time it dries. Curls come out bouncy with shine on them and enough give to move. Because the formulas are built to sit together, there is none of the pilling or grey residue you get when a cream and a gel from different brands meet.
