Coconut oil is one of the few oils small enough to get inside the hair shaft rather than coat it, which is why it turns up in deep treatments rather than finishing serums. Monoi oil, pressed from Tahitian gardenias soaked in coconut oil, does the conditioning and the shine.

Use it weekly. Apply generously to freshly shampooed damp hair from root to tip, cover with a shower cap and give it gentle heat for 15 to 30 minutes, then rinse and style as usual. The heat is what separates a treatment from a conditioner, and skipping it leaves you with an ordinary rinse-out. A shower cap and a warm towel will do the job if there is no hooded dryer in the house. 4oz, for 2C through 4C patterns.

Application tips
Pour into the palm rather than tipping it straight onto the head, or half of it ends up on your shoulders. Work through in four sections so every part of the hair gets covered.
Concentrate on the oldest hair at the ends and keep the roots lighter. Once the cap is on, do not skip the warmth, because gentle heat is what gets an oil past the surface. Shampoo it out afterwards if the hair feels heavy.
Results
Brittle coils come out soft and pliable, with visible spring back when you stretch a strand. Hair that felt like wire before the treatment feels like hair again.
Less comes away in the comb over the following days, and the shine holds without any weight to it. On tightly coiled type 4 hair the manageability gain is the one you notice most.
