Sweet almond and avocado oils sit in a cleansing cream base here, which puts this closer to a conditioner than a shampoo. That is deliberate. Curly and coily hair often needs washing more often than it can tolerate a sulphate wash, and a co-wash closes that gap.

  • Cleanses scalp and lengths without removing natural moisture
  • Serious slip, so detangling takes a fraction of the time
  • Cleanses, conditions and detangles in a single step
  • 16 oz, and you get through more of it than shampoo

The slip is the standout. Dense, tightly coiled hair that normally needs a long detangling session before conditioning can often be worked through with fingers alone while the co-wash is still on.

Sixteen ounces sounds like plenty until you start using it properly. A co-wash needs volume, because the slip that does the detangling only happens when there is enough product to coat the hair, and on thick hair that is several handfuls rather than a palmful. Buying it at this size is what makes the routine affordable.

Use it between your sulphate-free shampoo washes. Curls come out defined and soft, and there is no film left behind to clarify off later.

Application tips

Wet the hair thoroughly first, then apply straight to the scalp in parts and massage with the pads of your fingers. A co-wash needs friction rather than lather, so work at it for longer than you would a shampoo.

Pull the rest down through the lengths, detangle while it is on, then rinse hard. Residue is the usual complaint with co-washing, and it comes from rinsing too briefly rather than from the product.

Results

The scalp comes out genuinely clean, without that tight, squeaking feeling that says a shampoo has taken the oils with it. Product build-up lifts and the hair feels light again.

Curls stay defined through the wash rather than fluffing apart, and detangling happens as part of the cleanse instead of afterwards. Hair that dries frizzy after a normal shampoo dries smoother after this.
