Amla oil is an old habit in a lot of households, and this Dabur bottle is the children's version of it: 200 ml built around amla, the Indian gooseberry, for a weekly sit-down rather than a daily styler. Oil on a child's hair does two useful things. It coats the strand so it looks less dull, and it makes the hair pliable enough to plait or comb without snagging. Neither is complicated and neither needs overselling. What you notice after a few weeks is that the hair takes a comb more easily and the ends look less worn.

Warm a little between your palms, part the hair, and work it along the lengths rather than piling it at the roots. Leave it in for an hour before a wash, or use a very small amount on dry hair to smooth a style down. It suits fine, dry or frizz-prone children's hair, from waves through to looser coils.

Oiling is a routine rather than a one-off, and the bottle is sized for that. Two hundred millilitres is several months of weekly sessions on a child's head, so keep it somewhere warm enough that it pours easily and you will actually use it.

Application tips

A teaspoon covers most children's heads. Warm it, part the hair into four, and use the pads of your fingers on the scalp, never dragging along the strands. Half an hour before bath night is enough, and it becomes something they will sit still for if it happens in front of a screen. Shampoo out afterwards. Keep it off the face and well away from the eyes.

Results

Children's hair is finer and breaks more easily, and oiling before a wash gives it something to hold onto through the shampoo. Strands come out softer and comb without the usual protest.

The scalp is left conditioned, and the hair carries a light shine where it looked dull before. Next morning's detangle takes noticeably less time.
