The plain Amla oil is the one Dabur have been selling longest, and it is a maintenance product rather than a rescue one. If your hair is in reasonable shape and you want to keep it that way, this is the bottle.

Amla is the Indian gooseberry, and the whole tradition around it is the weekly oiling. Oil the scalp, massage it, leave it on, wash it out. Done consistently, it keeps the scalp comfortable and the hair conditioned, and it puts a shine on dark hair that is hard to get any other way.

The practical benefit is fewer broken ends. Hair that has been oiled and massaged handles combing and tying without snapping, and over months that shows up as length you did not lose.

200ml, and a little goes a long way once it is warmed.

Apply to the scalp in sections, massage for a few minutes, then work the rest through the lengths. Leave it an hour or overnight, then shampoo out. Suits wavy through 4a and works at every hair colour, though it shows best on dark hair.

Application tips

Sunday night is the traditional slot and there is a reason it stuck. Warm a palmful, part the hair into four, and massage the scalp for five minutes with the pads of your fingers before pulling the remainder through.

Sleep in it, shampoo it out in the morning. Once a week keeps hair in condition. Twice is reasonable if it is coarse or long.

Results

Weekly use shows up quietly, in texture. Strands feel supple where they used to feel straw-like, partings look less dry, and the surface reflects light evenly along its length.

The gain worth having is at the ends, where oiled hair frays and splits more slowly than bare hair does.

Length stays on the head, and less of it collects in the comb between washes.
