A 4oz paste is not a styler for the whole head. It is for the last five minutes, when the plaits are done and there are flyaways standing up around the parting.
PVP does the holding. Glyceryl stearate and cetyl alcohol keep the texture creamy enough to smooth rather than drag, and that balance is what stops it flaking white as it dries, which is the usual failure of anything that holds this firmly.
Warm a very small amount between your fingertips, press it into the hairline, then shape with a soft brush. It works on dry hair or slightly damp hair, and it is easy to overload, so build it up rather than starting heavy. Useful across waves through to type 4A when the style is a bun, a ponytail or a set of braids that has to survive a school day.

Application tips
Take a fingertip of paste, not a scoop, and rub it between your fingers until it turns clear. Press it onto the hairline, the nape, or wherever a bun is pulling away, then smooth with a soft brush.
Tie a scarf over the edges for ten minutes if you want them to set flat. Wash it out properly at the end of the week, since paste builds up faster than gel does.
Results
Edges lie down and stay down, and the shine sits low. A bun or a plait keeps its outline all day, with no fuzz at the front by lunchtime.
The hold is firm but still workable, so a section can be smoothed again in the afternoon without flaking or going grey on the strand.
