Creme of Nature pair aloe vera with black castor oil here. The aloe carries moisture into the hair while the shampoo is still on it, and the castor oil keeps the strand from squeaking dry, so the conditioner that follows has something to work with rather than starting from scratch.

Application tips
Wet the hair thoroughly, then put the shampoo on the scalp rather than the lengths and massage in rows with your fingertips.
One lather if the hair is only a few days dirty, two if you have been layering gels and butters. Let the run-off clean the lengths as you rinse. Follow with the matching mask or conditioner while the hair is still wet.
Results
The scalp comes out properly clean without the squeak that tells you the strand has been stripped.
Enough slip survives the rinse that a wide-tooth comb moves rather than catches, and that is where most wash day breakage gets avoided.
Hair feels soft while it is still wet, not only after conditioner. Over a few weeks it shows up as fewer short pieces in the sink.
