A custard is thicker than a gel and wetter than a cream, and that combination is what makes it work on tight curls and coils. Cantu's Define & Shine Custard sits in that middle ground: enough hold to keep a wash-and-go together, enough moisture that hair does not feel starved by the afternoon.
Pure shea butter carries the conditioning side. The hold is firm but it stays flexible, so curls keep their shape without setting hard, and the shine comes from the formula smoothing the cuticle rather than from anything left sitting on top.
It also stretches the curl a little and takes some of the bulk out, which is useful on dense hair where shrinkage is the main frustration rather than definition.
Apply to soaking wet hair in small sections, smooth it down the length, then let it dry undisturbed. 340 g, written for 3b through 4c textures.

Application tips
Soaking wet, not damp. Small sections, a coin-sized amount each, raked through with the fingers or shingled strand by strand where you want tighter definition.
One upward scrunch to encourage the coil, then hands off. Diffuse on low or let it air dry, and resist checking it halfway. Touching a setting custard is what puts the frizz back in.
Results
Definition without the plastic finish. Coils clump and hold their shape, and any cast that forms breaks easily with a little oil on the palms.
Hair stays soft under the hand rather than setting into a shell. Volume drops a fraction as the curl lengthens, which is usually welcome on dense hair, and the shape holds through most of the week.
