The wand is the reason it works. A brush that size reaches a specific patch of root without loading the whole section, so you can cover a temple or a parting line and leave everything else alone. It dries down without transferring onto a collar or a pillow, and being temporary colour, it comes out when you wash.

Application tips
Wipe the excess off the wand on the neck of the tube first, or the opening stroke goes on far too heavily. Work on dry, styled hair, last thing before you leave.
Short downward strokes from the root, following the way the hair falls, building in thin layers rather than loading one. Give it thirty seconds to set. Parting first, then temples, then anything sticking up.
Results
Grey disappears at the parting and the regrowth line reads as one colour again from normal talking distance. Flyaways lie down and stay down without the crispness of a hairspray.
The finish is matt rather than glossy and it does not stiffen the hair it lands on. It survives a day out, then comes away completely at the next wash with nothing left at the root.
