Most conditioners treat the scalp as somewhere to avoid. This one is built to be worked into it.

Avlon's Texture Release conditioner does two jobs on the same wash day. On the lengths it behaves like a normal rinse-out, adding slip so a wide-tooth comb can move through without dragging. At the roots it is meant to be massaged in, easing the tight, dry feeling that textured hair often gets between washes. The 475ml bottle is the larger of the two sizes and makes sense if you wash weekly with a lot of hair to cover.

  • Adds slip for detangling, root to ends
  • Softens the feel of a dry, tight scalp
  • Rinses clean without leaving a coating
  • Works on natural, relaxed and heat-styled textured hair

Avlon has been making professional products for textured hair for a long time, and this reads like a salon back-bar formula: unfussy, generous, designed to be used properly rather than sparingly. Best across 2A to 3C.

Use it after shampooing rather than instead of it. Work it down the lengths first, then take your fingertips to the scalp in sections and give it a minute or two before rinsing. It is not a clarifying product, so if your scalp is heavy with build-up you would want to clarify first and use this to put the comfort back afterwards.

Application tips

Use it in two passes. First through the lengths, combed in and left to sit.

Then a second, smaller amount worked into the scalp along partings with the fingertips. Three to five minutes covers both. Rinse for longer than you think at the roots. At this size you can be generous, which is how a back-bar formula is meant to be used.

Results

Real slip out of the rinse, and the softness holds as the hair dries down.

The roots feel comfortable instead of tight, and that lasts several days rather than an afternoon. Nothing accumulates across weekly washes. Relaxed and heat-styled lengths get some flexibility back, so brushing them out does less damage than it did.
