Twist-outs live or die on what you put in before you twist. Too light and the twist unravels; too heavy and the hair dries flat and greasy. A defining cream is the middle setting, and this is As I Am's.
It is thick enough to hold a twist or a braid in place while it dries and moisturising enough that the hair does not go brittle overnight in the style. When you take the twists down, the sections stay separated and elongated instead of shrinking straight back up, and the finish is soft to the touch rather than set. Frizz stays down through the day, which is what makes a two-day-old braid-out still wearable.
Apply to damp, sectioned hair, smooth from root to end so the whole length is coated, then twist, braid or coil and leave it to dry fully. The 8 oz jar is the smaller of the two sizes it comes in.

Application tips
Damp hair, small parts, and patience.
Take a section no wider than two fingers, smooth the cream down from root to end, then twist or coil it and move on. Two-strand twists want a fine coating along the whole length, not a blob at the root. Let it dry completely before you unravel anything, ideally overnight under a satin bonnet.
Results
Twist-outs and braid-outs come down defined and stay defined into a third day.
There is enough moisture that the hair feels soft rather than set, and enough hold that the pattern does not collapse by lunchtime. Frizz stays low along the length, and coils separate cleanly when you unravel them instead of merging back into each other.
