ApHogee have a reputation for protein treatments that mean business, which makes Curlific the gentler entry point in the range. It is a deep conditioner built for curls, coils and waves rather than a hard protein reconstruction, and it is designed for weekly use rather than occasional rescue.

The formula runs on shea butter, hydrolysed quinoa and keratin amino acids. The amino acids and the quinoa handle strength, the shea handles the softness that stops a protein treatment leaving hair stiff.

Hydrolysed is the word to notice on the quinoa. It means the protein has been broken into pieces small enough to get into the hair rather than sit on the surface, and that is the difference between a protein that works and one that only coats.

What it does:

  • Puts stretch back into dry, brittle curls
  • Cuts breakage from combing and styling
  • Restores bounce to curl patterns that have gone limp
  • Holds the result week to week rather than for a single wash

8oz, used on clean damp hair, worked through in sections and rinsed. If your curls have dried out over a winter of indoor heating, this is the shape of product that fixes it.

Application tips

Shampoo first, then squeeze the excess water out. Section into four, coat the lengths from an inch below the root downward, and leave it on while you finish in the shower. Longer if you can spare it, and warmth from a cap gets more out of it.

Detangle while the treatment is still in, wide tooth comb, working up from the ends. Rinse cool. Weekly is the rhythm it was built for, and more is not better with protein.

Results

Curls come back with spring in them. The stretch test gives it away, a strand that used to snap now pulls and returns instead.

Softness is the other half. Protein on its own can leave hair stiff, and the shea keeps this on the pliable side, so clumps stay defined without the straw feel. Combing gets quieter, ends look less ragged, and the pattern holds its shape further down the length.
