Relaxer does not stop working when you rinse it out. Residual alkalinity keeps the cuticle open and keeps the hair processing, which is why the neutralising step is not optional and why doing it badly is where most relaxer damage actually comes from.

Affirm Normalizing Shampoo is that step. It removes the traces of relaxer chemical left in the hair and returns hair and scalp to an acidic pH, which closes the cuticle back down and locks moisture in behind it.

  • Neutralises and removes relaxer residue
  • Restores the hair's natural acidic pH
  • Conditions, so hair detangles straight after the service
  • Leaves the scalp feeling settled rather than tight

Lather, rinse and repeat until the water runs clear. Two washes is the minimum on a full head, and a third does no harm at all.

The 950ml bottle is a backbar size, made by Avlon for salons running relaxer services week in, week out.

Application tips

This one is timed, not casual. Straight after the relaxer is rinsed out, lather it through the whole head and leave it sitting for the full time the instructions state, then rinse and repeat.

Many of these shampoos colour the lather so it changes shade once the alkalinity is gone. Keep washing until it stops changing. Skipping the second round is the usual mistake.

Results

The chemical action stops. Hair that would otherwise keep processing quietly for hours afterwards is brought back down to its normal acidity, and the cuticle closes flat again. You feel it immediately. The rubbery, over soft texture firms up, hair stops shedding into the basin, and the scalp is left comfortable rather than tender for the rest of the evening.

Composition

The full INCI is printed on the pack. We publish it here as soon as the brand supplies it, and we will read it off the bottle for you if you ask.
