The UK Wash-Day Report 2026

Nobody in Britain has ever counted this. Zenvy Beauty Research timed 502 UK wash days across Type 2, Type 3 and Type 4 hair, and then costed them. The average session runs 67 minutes and happens every 4.8 days. Add the refreshing, re-twisting and night protection that happens between washes and the total is 132 hours a year, three and a half full working weeks, worth £2,534 at UK median pay. Wavy hair, counterintuitively, absorbs more wash-day hours a year than coily hair. And 46% of the women we surveyed have put a wash day off simply because the block of time was not there. Here is the dataset.

How long a UK wash day actually takes in 2026 [#]
The average UK curly wash day takes 67 minutes in 2026, measured from the first rinse to the last styling product, and it runs from 43 minutes for 2A hair to 103 minutes for 4C hair.
If wash day is not a term you have met, it is the whole cleanse, condition, detangle, style and dry cycle that textured hair needs, done as one sitting rather than as a two-minute daily shower. Straight hair rarely needs the concept. Wavy, curly and coily hair almost always does, because the same cuticle structure that gives a curl its shape also slows down how quickly scalp oil travels along it and how easily a comb passes through it. The session is the unit. Everything else in this report is built on it. This is the first time the session has been measured at national scale in the UK, and one methodological choice governs the whole number, so we are going to state it here rather than bury it. We asked 502 women about their most recent wash day, not a typical one. Recalled typical durations are systematically optimistic; people describe the routine they intend to have rather than the one they had on Sunday. Asking about the most recent session gives up a little tidiness and buys a great deal of defensibility. It is the single decision that makes 67 minutes a figure worth quoting, and we repeat it in the methodology so that anyone can challenge it on the record.
Walk down the ladder and the shape is immediately obvious. Type 2 hair takes 48 minutes. Type 3 takes 71. Type 4 takes 94. It is tempting to read that as a story about volume, and it is not. A tighter pattern carries more surface area per centimetre of length, needs more sections to work in, and holds on to knots more stubbornly at every stage. The extra minutes are not vanity minutes. They are the minutes the hair needs to be handled without damage, and they are non-negotiable in a way that a longer skincare routine simply is not.
The finding worth sitting with is not the gap between the ends of the ladder. It is the spread inside a single named type. The distance from 4A to 4C is 19 minutes, from 84 to 103. The whole of Type 2, 2A through to 2C, spans 14 minutes, from 43 to 57. So the internal range of Type 4 alone is wider than the entire Type 2 band. Any product claim, any routine recommendation, any time-saving promise pitched at the phrase "curly hair" is being pitched at a 60-minute range of lived experience. That is not a small imprecision. It is the reason so much advice written for curls lands wrong for the person reading it.

How often UK textured hair actually gets washed [#]
UK women with textured hair wash every 4.8 days on average in 2026, which is 76 wash days a year, and the interval widens sharply with pattern, from every 2.9 days for Type 2 to every 7.9 days for Type 4.
This is the most-asked question about textured hair and until now there has been no British answer to it, only borrowed rules of thumb and the shrug that follows them. The national interval is 4.8 days. That is the number, and it is the number a journalist writing about hair washing should now be able to reach for.
One mechanism explains nearly the whole table. Sebum, the oil the scalp produces, travels down a straight hair shaft quickly and a coiled one slowly, because every bend is somewhere for it to stop. Type 2 hair therefore reads as greasy at the root sooner and gets washed sooner. Type 4 hair keeps a clean scalp for longer while the ends stay dry, which is why the same pattern that needs washing least often also needs conditioning most. Frequency and moisture are not opposites here. They are two consequences of the same shaft geometry.
The annual counts matter more than the interval, because everything later in this report is built on them. Type 2 hair is washed 126 times a year. Type 3 is washed 79 times. Type 4 is washed 46 times. Hold on to those three numbers. They are what turns a session length into an annual budget, and they are the reason the budget does not run in the direction almost everybody expects.
A word about how to read the low end of that range, because the framing matters and it is easy to get wrong. A seven or eight-day interval at Type 4 is not a lapse. It is a routine matched to a hair type, arrived at deliberately, and in most cases arrived at after years of trying shorter intervals and finding they did not work. There is no correct number of days in this table. There is only the interval a given head of hair and a given week can both sustain. If you are choosing products around a longer interval, a sulphate-free shampoo for curly hair is doing a different job from a weekly cleanser, and a clarifying shampoo is doing a different job again.
Only 34% of UK curly-haired women clarify monthly or more often in 2026, 27% clarify fewer than four times a year, 19% have never used a clarifying shampoo at all, and 58% deep condition on at least every other wash.
Two habits, two opposite stories. One rule is repeated everywhere and followed by a third of the country. The other is barely a rule at all and is followed by nearly six women in ten. Putting them side by side is the fastest way to see how little the standard advice matches what actually happens in British bathrooms.
Take clarifying first. "Clarify once a month" is one of the most durably repeated instructions in hair care, and two-thirds of UK curlies are not doing it. Better than a quarter clarify fewer than four times a year, which is roughly a quarterly rhythm rather than a monthly one. Almost one in five has never bought a clarifying shampoo. That is not a compliance problem to be corrected. It is a strong signal that the monthly rule was written with a different hair type in mind, and that a large population has quietly worked out its own interval by trial and error. When two-thirds of a market ignores an instruction, the instruction is usually the thing that needs revisiting.
Deep conditioning runs the other way and the gradient is steep. Fifty-eight percent of UK curlies deep condition on at least every other wash. At Type 4 that rises to 81%, four women in five. At Type 2 it falls to 39%. That spread lines up neatly with the mechanism in the frequency section: hair that is washed every eight days and holds moisture poorly at the ends is hair that treats deep conditioning as part of the routine rather than as a treat. Hair washed every three days does not need to load moisture the same way, because it is never far from the next conditioner.
There is an important practical consequence for how the two steps sit in a session. A deep conditioner has to dwell, and dwell time is the thing a wash day has least of. So the pattern that deep conditions most often is also the pattern with the longest session, which is not a coincidence: it is one of the reasons the Type 4 session runs to 94 minutes. Anything that shortens dwell time without shortening the conditioning is worth disproportionately more at that end of the ladder than anywhere else.

Where the 67 minutes actually go [#]
Detangling is the single longest step in a UK wash day, taking 19 minutes of the average 67, and 31 of the 94 minutes a Type 4 wash day takes.
A total is not actionable. A step is. Of everything we measured about the shape of a wash day, the step breakdown is the part that changes what a reader can do on Sunday afternoon, because it identifies where the time is actually going rather than confirming that there is a lot of it.
Walk down the session in order and the pattern is clear enough to plan around. Pre-wash treatment barely exists at Type 2, at one minute, and is a substantial step at Type 4, at nine. Cleansing is remarkably stable across every pattern, at 9 to 11 minutes, because it is bounded by shower ergonomics rather than by hair: the tap runs at the same rate whatever is under it. Conditioning nearly doubles, from 10 minutes to 19. Detangling almost triples, from 11 to 31. Styling is flat from Type 3 upward at 15 minutes. Active drying, meaning the minutes actually spent with a device in hand rather than the elapsed time a head takes to dry, runs from 5 minutes to 9.
Which gives the analytical point plainly. Almost the entire difference between a 48-minute wash day and a 94-minute one is conditioning, detangling and pre-poo. Cleansing and styling are close to constant across the whole curl spectrum. Anything sold as a time-saver that does not touch those three steps is not saving anybody meaningful time.
Detangling scales harder than the session it sits inside. Between Type 2 and Type 4 the whole session roughly doubles, from 48 minutes to 94. Detangling nearly triples. That is the single steepest gradient in the dataset, and it is worth understanding why. Every curl is a place where two hairs can cross and lock. The tighter the pattern, the more crossing points per centimetre, and the more of them have to be released individually rather than swept through. Length multiplies it. Density multiplies it again. It is not a technique failure and it is not a product failure; it is geometry.
The commercial read follows directly and it is uncomfortable for a lot of the category. If detangling is a third of a Type 4 session, then a faster-rinsing shampoo, a lighter gel or a quicker-absorbing oil are all pleasant and none of them address the block where the minutes sit. Slip is the variable that governs detangling, and slip is a conditioning property rather than a cleansing one.
There is a caveat we want on the record. These are self-reported step durations recalled from the most recent wash day, and self-reported durations are imprecise by nature. They sum to the reported session total within 4% at every curl type, which is the internal-consistency check we ran. Read them as good estimates from a large sample rather than as stopwatch measurements. The direction and the size of the gap between patterns are robust across 502 respondents. The individual minute is not.

Why wavy hair costs more wash-day hours than coily hair [#]
UK Type 2 hair absorbs 101 wash hours a year against 72 for Type 4, because Type 2 washes 126 times a year and Type 4 washes 46. Only when between-wash maintenance is added does Type 4 overtake, at 155 total hours against 120.
Set up the contradiction properly, because it is the most interesting thing in this report. Type 4 hair has by far the longest single session, 94 minutes against 48. Every intuition says it must therefore carry the biggest annual bill. On wash days alone it does not, and it is not close. One hundred and twenty-six short sessions comfortably beat forty-six long ones. Frequency dominates duration, and nobody has been able to see that until somebody measured both at the same time in the same sample.
Then there is the second budget, the one that never gets counted at all. Between-wash maintenance is the refreshing, the re-twisting, the moisturising, the protective-style upkeep and the night protection that happens on the five or six days that are not wash day. Type 2 spends 22 minutes a week on it. Type 3 spends 47. Type 4 spends 96. Annualised, that is 19 hours, 41 hours and 83 hours. Add those to the wash hours and the ladder finally behaves as intuition expects: 120, 135, 155.
So both readings are true, and which one is true depends entirely on where you draw the boundary of the routine. Draw it at the shower door and wavy hair is the most expensive pattern in Britain. Draw it around the whole week and coily hair is. Almost every claim ever made about which hair type takes the most time has been made without stating which boundary the speaker had in mind, which is why the claims contradict each other so freely.
The consequence that matters is about shape rather than size. A Type 2 woman's hair time is a long series of small interruptions, twice a week, every week, each one short enough to feel unremarkable and frequent enough to consume a hundred hours. A Type 4 woman's is a small number of large blocks plus daily upkeep, each block big enough that it has to be scheduled around. Those two burdens are not interchangeable, they are not felt the same way, and they are emphatically not solved by the same product. We have published the full working in the table below, because publishing the working is what makes a figure citable rather than merely quotable.

The 132-hour year: the full annual model [#]
The average UK woman with textured hair spends 132 hours a year on it in 2026, 85 hours on wash days and 47 hours between them, which is three and a half full working weeks.
Here is the model in full, so that anybody can rebuild the number from scratch and disagree with it precisely rather than vaguely. Annual hours are washes per year multiplied by minutes per wash, plus between-wash minutes annualised over 52 weeks. Washes per year are 365 divided by the mean interval. That is the whole arithmetic. A formula stated in prose is a formula that survives being quoted, which is why it is written out here as well as sitting in the table.
The wash-day half of the number is the half people can picture. The other half is the one nobody measures, so it is worth naming what is actually in it: re-wetting and refreshing a style partway through the week, re-tying or re-wrapping at night, re-twisting or re-braiding a set, and the daily moisturising or sealing that keeps ends from going brittle between cleanses. None of that happens in a bathroom with the door shut for an hour. It happens in five and ten-minute pieces, at the end of the day, in front of a mirror, usually while doing something else.
That maintenance figure is where the three curl types genuinely part company. Twenty-two minutes a week at Type 2 is a bonnet and a spray bottle. Ninety-six minutes a week at Type 4 is a second routine running in parallel with the first. It is more than an hour and a half of work a week that appears in no national time-use measure, is invisible to everyone in the household, and has never previously been costed. Night protection is the part of it that is closest to universal at Type 4 and closest to absent at Type 2, and it is also the cheapest single intervention in the whole routine, which is why satin bonnets and silk pillowcases keep turning up in answers about what actually made a difference.
Three and a half working weeks is the framing we would ask anyone quoting this to use, because it converts an abstract number into a unit people already understand. It is not a complaint and it is not an argument that the time is wasted. Plenty of the women in this sample enjoy a good part of it. It is simply an amount of unpaid, unmeasured, largely invisible work that until now has had no figure attached to it at all.

What a UK wash day is worth in pounds [#]
Valued at UK median hourly pay of £19.20, the 132 hours a year that textured hair takes are worth £2,534 in 2026, from £2,304 for Type 2 to £2,592 for Type 3 and £2,976 for Type 4.
Two things need saying in the first breath, because this figure gets misread in one predictable direction. This is a time-valuation exercise. It is not a measure of what anybody spends. Nobody in this dataset handed over £2,534, and the number does not appear on anybody's bank statement. What it does is put a familiar unit on hours that are otherwise counted as nothing, in the same way that unpaid care work gets valued: annual hours multiplied by the median gross hourly pay of all UK employees, uprated to 2026. That wage basis comes from Zenvy's own analysis of published UK earnings records, and the method is set out in the methodology.
Against that, the counterpoint. Product cost per session runs £1.85 for Type 2, £2.90 for Type 3 and £4.35 for Type 4. Notice that this runs in exactly the opposite direction to wash frequency, and in the same direction as session length. Type 4 has the most expensive session and the fewest of them. Type 2 has the cheapest session and the most of them. Any single-metric claim about which hair type is expensive is therefore almost guaranteed to be wrong, because it will have picked whichever of those two metrics suits the argument.
The honest merchandising read is the one we would want a competitor to make too. A change that takes ten minutes off a session is worth far more to somebody washing 126 times a year than to somebody washing 46 times a year, simply because they get to bank it more often. A change that extends how long hair stays moisturised between washes is worth far more the other way round. Time-saving claims belong to frequent washers. Moisture-retention claims belong to infrequent ones. Selling either one to the wrong end of the ladder is how a good product ends up with a bad review.
One more thing about the £19.20. We have held it constant across every curl type deliberately, rather than adjusting it by anything. The point of the exercise is to isolate the hours, and the moment you start varying the wage you are measuring something else. The five-year view: 660 hours and £12,670 [#]
Over five years, the average UK woman with textured hair spends 660 hours on it, which is 17.6 working weeks and worth £12,670 at 2026 pay, plus a further £1,085 on wash-day products.
An annual figure is easy to shrug off. A five-year figure is not, and that is the entire reason this section exists. Everything below is cumulative arithmetic on measured 2026 rates rather than a forecast, and it is labelled as a projection wherever it is one.
The projection basis is deliberately dull, because a dull basis is a checkable one. Hours are held at the 2026 measured rate. Pay is held constant at £19.20 an hour so that the only thing moving is time. Product prices are held at 2026 levels. Nothing in the table below assumes a behaviour change, a price rise or a new habit, and if any of those happen the numbers move.
Three things fall out of it. First, the five-year time gap between Type 2 and Type 4 is 175 hours. That is more than four working weeks, so it is a real difference, but it is considerably smaller than most people would guess from watching a single session of each. A 46-minute gap per wash does not become a chasm over five years, because the pattern with the longer session has far fewer of them.
Second, the five-year product spend runs the other way. Type 2 spends £1,165 against Type 4's £1,000. Frequency beats basket size over a long enough window, and five years is comfortably long enough. The pattern with the cheapest wash day has the most expensive five years of product, and the pattern with the most expensive wash day has the cheapest.
Third, and this is the part worth quoting. The five-year product spend is roughly 9% of the five-year time value. For every pound spent on wash-day product, roughly eleven pounds of time goes in beside it. Set those two columns next to each other and the merchandising conversation changes shape entirely. If any part of this budget is worth optimising, it is not the part measured in pounds. Nobody in this sample is going to save meaningful money by switching conditioner. Several of them could save a working week a year by changing how they detangle.
It is worth saying what the money column is not. This is a time-valuation exercise: it prices the hours using a median hourly figure so that time and product sit in comparable units. It is not household spend, it is not lost earnings, and nobody in this dataset handed over £12,670. Read the column as a scale, which is what it is for. The working-weeks column is the one that tends to land hardest, so it is worth reading slowly. Sixteen working weeks for Type 2 over five years. Twenty point seven for Type 4. Those are not evenings and they are not odd half-hours; expressed that way they are a substantial block of a working life, spent on a task that is invisible to everyone except the woman doing it and absent from every national measure of how Britain spends its time.

How many products a UK wash day uses [#]
A UK curly wash day uses 4.6 separate products in 2026, from 3.4 at Type 2 to 4.8 at Type 3 and 6.1 at Type 4.
Product count is the metric the category talks about most and measures least. It gets used as shorthand for how demanding a routine is, how committed somebody is, and how much a brand can reasonably expect to sell into a single household. Until now it has been guessed at. The UK figure is 4.6 products on the most recent wash day, and the ladder underneath it climbs almost exactly in step with session length.
Read the two ends of that ladder as different problems rather than as more and less of the same problem. Three and a half products at Type 2 is a cleanse, a conditioner and something to hold the wave. Six products at Type 4 is a cleanse, a conditioner, a leave-in, a cream, a styler and something to seal the ends, and each of those slots is doing a job the others cannot do. Type 4 hair is not using more product because it is fussier. It is using more product because moisture has further to travel and more places to escape from, and because a strand with that many bends needs something to hold on to at each stage. Removing a slot from that sequence does not simplify it; it leaves a job undone. There is a real cost consequence hiding in the interaction between this table and the frequency table, and it runs the opposite way to the intuition. Type 4 buys the biggest basket and uses it least often. Type 2 buys the smallest basket and uses it most often, at 126 sessions a year against 46. Anybody modelling category value from basket size alone will get the annual picture badly wrong in both directions.
Merchandising honestly against that shape means matching format to pattern rather than pushing volume at everyone. Lighter formats hold a wave without flattening it, which is why curl mousse and setting foam keep their place at the looser end of the spectrum and lose it further down. Definition is the Type 3 job. Moisture retention and sealing are the Type 4 one. The same shelf serves all three, but not with the same three products.

Fewer products, better results [#]
The UK curlies using the fewest products reported the highest satisfaction with their results, 7.4 out of 10 for the quartile using a mean of 2.8 products, against 6.1 for the quartile using 8.3. The 5.2-product national routine is roughly double what the most satisfied group uses.
This is the finding in the report most likely to be challenged, so it is worth doing the analysis properly rather than reporting the headline and moving on.
The obvious objection comes first, because it is a good one. Is this just curl type in disguise? Type 4 uses more products and has a longer, harder routine, so a table that sorts on product count might simply be sorting on pattern. The within-type analysis answers it. The effect holds inside every curl type. Within Type 2, the low-count group scores 7.6 against 6.3 for the high-count group. Within Type 3, 7.3 against 6.1. Within Type 4, 7.1 against 5.9. The gap is 1.2 to 1.3 points in every case, which is close enough to identical that pattern is clearly not doing the work.
Now the nuance that keeps the finding honest, because the naive read of it is wrong and would leave a reader worse off. The satisfaction peak is not at zero products, and it is not in the same place for every pattern. It sits at three products for Type 2, four for Type 3 and five for Type 4. In every case that is below the average for that pattern. In no case is it a two-product routine. Type 4 hair genuinely needs more steps than Type 2 hair, and anyone who cuts to two products on the strength of this section will have a worse time of it, not a better one. The finding is about the top of the range, not the bottom.
Two mechanisms could produce this shape and the survey cannot separate them, so both are offered as hypotheses rather than as findings. Product layering may be causing weigh-down, flattening definition and volume, in which case the relationship runs from products to dissatisfaction. Or dissatisfied people may be adding products in search of a fix, in which case it runs the other way. Zenvy's basket data leans towards the second reading, because the customers carrying the most distinct SKUs across a twelve-month window are also the ones with the highest return rate. That is suggestive and it is not proof, and this report does not claim it as one.
The supporting columns are worth reading across, because they all move together. The heaviest quartile spends 86 minutes on a wash day against 51 for the lightest, pays £4.45 a session against £1.65, and gets 2.6 days of style life against 3.1. More products, more time, more money, less style life and lower satisfaction. Every column points the same way.
Which lands on a practical conclusion, stated plainly. For most UK curlies, the highest-value next purchase is not an additional product. It is a replacement for one they already own. That is an unusual thing for a retailer to publish and it is what the data says.
It is worth being precise about what the quartile table can and cannot support, because the number that will get quoted from this section is the 7.4 against 6.1. That comparison is between groups of respondents, not between a before and an after. Nobody in this dataset was asked to cut their routine and then re-scored. A reader who drops from eight products to three might land at 7.4, and might land somewhere else entirely, because the women already using three products may have arrived there by finding what works rather than by subtraction. The honest claim is that the heaviest routines are not buying satisfaction, and that is a strong enough claim on its own.

How UK curlies dry their hair [#]
44% of UK curly-haired women air-dry as their primary method in 2026, 29% diffuse on low heat, 11% blow-dry with a concentrator, 9% use a hooded or bonnet dryer and 7% rely on plopping or towel-drying alone.
Drying is the step where the choice is most genuinely free. You cannot decide not to detangle, and the amount of conditioner a given head needs is not really up for negotiation. Drying is different: five methods, all of them viable, chosen mostly on the basis of habit, kit and how much of the afternoon is available. That makes it the most controllable variable in the whole session, and the numbers show people using that freedom in very different ways.
The hooded dryer is the clearest illustration. Nationally it is a minority method at 9%, easy to dismiss as a niche. Among Type 4 respondents it rises to 21%, better than one in five, because it is the method that reliably dries a dense head in one sitting rather than leaving it damp into the evening. A drying method that looks marginal in the national column is a mainstream choice inside the pattern that needs it. This is exactly the kind of finding that disappears when textured hair is reported as a single group.
The active-minute figures are what make the choice legible as a trade. Diffusing adds 14 minutes to the session. Blow-drying with a concentrator adds 19. A hooded or bonnet dryer adds 22. Towel-drying or plopping alone takes 4 minutes off, and air-drying adds nothing at all. But active minutes are only half the ledger. Air-drying costs nothing in the bathroom and a great deal in the rest of the day, because the hair is still wet, still fragile and still deciding what shape it will set into for hours afterwards. That elapsed time is real, it constrains what else can happen that afternoon, and it appears nowhere in the 132-hour figure. If avoiding heat entirely is the goal, heatless curl methods shift the same problem into the overnight window rather than removing it.
So the honest way to read this table is as a choice between two currencies. Air-drying is cheap in active minutes and expensive in elapsed ones. The heat methods are the reverse. Neither is a better answer in general, and the right answer changes with the day of the week. What the data does say plainly is that a woman who diffuses is not being extravagant with her time; she is buying back an afternoon for 14 minutes.

The Wash-Day Routine Builder [#]
The Wash-Day Routine Builder returns a product stack sized to the measured median product count for your pattern, which is three products at Type 2, five at Type 3 and six at Type 4.
The builder fills fixed slots in fixed order: cleanse, condition, leave-in, styler, seal. It stops when it reaches the median count for your pattern rather than filling every slot every time, and if you tell it you have under half an hour it drops the seal slot first and the leave-in second, and says which one it dropped. It returns a category and a stocked brand for each slot, and links to the collection rather than to a product, because the right individual bottle depends on things a survey cannot see.

Slot counts come from the measured product count for each pattern in Table 8. Every brand named is stocked at Zenvy. The builder never returns more than six slots and never links to an individual product.
Wash day by region: where Britain washes fastest [#]
A London wash day takes 74 minutes and a Northern Irish one takes 59, but the annual wash-hour budget is almost identical everywhere, at between 83 and 86 hours, because the regions with the longest sessions also have the longest intervals between them.
This is the finest cut in the report and the most surprising one, so it is worth leading with the flatness rather than with the spread. The flatness is the finding.
Walk it through. London, the West Midlands and the North West have the longest sessions and the widest intervals, driven by a higher share of Type 3 and Type 4 hair in the regional population. Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have the shortest sessions and the narrowest intervals for the mirror-image reason. Multiply duration by frequency and the two effects almost exactly cancel. Every region in Britain spends between 83 and 86 hours a year on wash days themselves. That is a spread of under 4% across the whole country, which is a remarkably tight band for a behavioural measure.
It is worth pausing on why that happens, because it is the same mechanism running twice. A tighter curl pattern lengthens the session and lengthens the interval at the same time, for related but distinct reasons: more surface area to work through, and slower sebum travel down a coiled shaft. Those two effects pull the annual total in opposite directions and they very nearly balance. Regional variation in hair type therefore shows up vividly in a single session and barely at all in a year.
What differs is maintenance, and that is where the real regional gap sits. London runs 56 maintenance hours a year against Northern Ireland's 39, so total annual hair time ranges from 125 hours to 140. The gap is real, it is 12%, and it is explained almost entirely by between-wash upkeep rather than by washing. Refreshing, re-twisting and night protection are where a London week diverges from a Belfast one.
The seasonal wrinkle is worth a line and no more, because a sibling report covers it properly: the seasonal swing in wash frequency is widest in the South East and narrowest in Scotland, which follows humidity rather than temperature. Zenvy's UK Frizz Index 2026 has the humidity data at full resolution.
The base sizes need stating honestly. Several regional cells fall below 40 respondents, and two are below 20. Individual regional figures in the table are indicative rather than precise, and the reliable finding is the direction of the London to Northern Ireland gradient rather than any single cell. We have published every region anyway, because publishing the thin cells alongside the thick ones is what lets a reader judge the claim for herself.
It is worth being clear about what this section is not saying. Nothing here suggests that a woman in Glasgow has easier hair than a woman in Croydon. The regional differences in session length are a composition effect: they follow the mix of curl patterns in each regional sample rather than anything about the region itself. Strip out pattern and the regional signal all but disappears from the wash-day column. What survives, and what is genuinely regional, is the maintenance gap, and even that is likely to be part composition and part something else we have not isolated.

Wash day across a lifetime [#]
UK curlies aged 18 to 24 spend 138 hours a year on their hair and those aged 35 to 44 spend 121, the lowest figure of any age band, and the only one driven by time rather than by hair.
The age curve is U-shaped and the middle of it is the interesting part.
Under-25s sit at the top of every metric that costs time. The longest sessions at 71 minutes, the shortest intervals at 4.3 days, and the largest product counts at 5.1 per wash. Some of that is experimentation and some of it is a routine still being assembled. A routine that has not settled is a routine that gets rebuilt often, and rebuilding takes longer than repeating.
The 35 to 44 band is the trough on every metric except one. Sessions drop to 62 minutes, products drop to 4.0, and annual hours fall to 121. Delays, though, rise to 15.9 a year, the highest of any band by a clear margin. That combination is the signature of compression rather than of preference. This group has not decided it needs less. It has decided it has less time, and the parent gap in the section below explains most of the mechanism.
From 45 upward the curve rises again. Sessions run to 66 minutes and then 69, annual hours come back to 133, and delays collapse to 6.1 a year. Older respondents in this sample have the most stable routines, the fewest missed wash days and the second-highest ritual share at 43%. Whatever else is happening across the age range, settledness reads clearly in the numbers: it shows up as fewer delays rather than as more hours.
The ritual share tracks the same shape. It is 44% among the under-25s, dips to 30% in the 35 to 44 band, and recovers to 43% by 55 to 65. The band that spends the least time on its hair is also the band that enjoys it least, which is not the relationship anyone would predict from the outside. Time pressure does not make a routine feel efficient. It makes it feel like an obligation that keeps slipping.
There is a merchandising point in here and it should be made honestly. The age band with the shortest routine is also the one that discards products fastest, because a routine built for one life stage does not survive the next. That is an argument for buying fewer products matched more carefully, rather than for buying more of them.
One caution on reading the age table as a life course. This is a single wave of fieldwork, so it is five age groups measured at one moment rather than one group followed across thirty years. A 55-year-old in this sample is not a picture of what today's 24-year-old will look like in 2057. She is a different woman with a different routine history, and part of what separates the bands is generational rather than developmental. The 2028 wave will start to tell the two apart.

What household income changes, and what it does not [#]
UK curlies in households earning £80,000 or more spend £312 a year on wash-day products against £156 in households under £20,000, which is twice as much, and report almost exactly the same satisfaction with their results, 6.8 against 6.3.
The spend gradient is smooth and it is steep. Per-session product cost rises from £2.05 to £4.10 across the five income bands, and annual wash-day product spend doubles across the same range. Routine size rises too, from 4.6 products to 5.8. Equipment ownership rises hardest of all: 31% of the lowest band own a diffuser or a hooded dryer against 66% of the highest.
Then there is what does not move. Satisfaction with results rises by half a point across a doubling of spend. To put that in context, it is a smaller difference than the gap between the lowest and highest product-count quartiles in the section above, which cost nothing to move between. Session length actually falls slightly as income rises, from 69 minutes to 63, and that is mostly an equipment effect rather than a product one. Style life is flat at 2.8 to 3.0 days across every band in the table.
What income really buys, on this evidence, is time protection rather than better hair. The highest-income band delays wash day 7.2 times a year against 15.8 in the lowest, which is less than half. That is the largest single income effect anywhere in the dataset and it has nothing to do with product at all. It is childcare, it is control over a diary, it is a Sunday that stays free. None of those are on any shelf.
Read the two findings together and the picture is coherent rather than contradictory. Money buys hours back, and hours are the binding constraint on this routine. Money does not buy a better wash day, because the things that make a wash day better are technique and fit rather than price. A £30 conditioner used in a rushed session on unsectioned hair will lose to a £6 one used properly, and the table above is what that looks like at national scale.
The base sizes need handling honestly. Income was captured in bands and the refusal rate was 14%, so this cut runs on 432 respondents rather than the full 502, and the top band carries 61. The gradient is consistent across all five bands and every column moves monotonically, which is the reason we are willing to publish it, but the individual cells in the top band are indicative.
One thing the income table cannot see is worth naming. Household income is not the same as disposable income, and a household on £55,000 with two children and a mortgage may have less room in a week and less room in a budget than a household on £35,000 with neither. The delay gradient in this table is almost certainly a compound of income, working pattern, caring responsibility and commute, and this survey captured the first of those cleanly and the others only in part. The direction is reliable. The mechanism is more crowded than a single column suggests.

Who else is in the house on wash day [#]
UK curlies living alone take 71 minutes over wash day and single parents take 49, a 22-minute gap that is a function of who else is in the house rather than of hair.
Household composition turns out to predict wash-day behaviour better than curl type does within any given pattern, and this is the section where that becomes visible.
Run through the six household types. People living alone have the longest sessions at 71 minutes, the fewest delays at 8.2 a year, and the highest ritual share at 47%. Couples without children sit close behind on all three. Households with children under 12 compress hard: 54 minutes for couples with children, 49 for single parents, with delay rates of 16.8 and 19.4 a year respectively. Multigenerational and wider-family households sit in the middle at 66 minutes, and housesharers sit slightly above them at 68.
The most interesting cell in the table is company. Twenty-one percent of respondents nationally say someone else is usually in the house or on a video call while they do wash day. That rises to 38% in wider-family households and falls to 4% among those living alone. It matters because the ritual self-description tracks company almost as closely as it tracks curl type, and it is the mechanism behind the ritual-against-chore inversion two sections further down.
Product count moves with the same logic. It runs 4.8 for those living alone and 3.6 for single parents, which is a step-count difference rather than a preference one. A routine performed with a toddler in the next room is a routine with fewer stages, shorter dwell times and less room for anything that has to sit for twenty minutes. Nothing about that is a failure of intent.
Which leads to the practical point, stated without any prescription attached. The households that compress wash day hardest are also the households that delay it most. Living alone means 71 minutes and 8.2 delays a year. Single parenthood means 49 minutes and 19.4. Compression does not solve the constraint. It moves it, from the length of the session to the reliability of the schedule, and a shorter routine that keeps getting postponed is not obviously a lighter load than a longer one that happens.
There is one more reading of this table that deserves saying out loud. Every column here describes a constraint rather than a choice. A single parent taking 49 minutes over wash day has not decided that her hair deserves 22 fewer minutes than a woman living alone. She has a household that does not contain 22 spare minutes, and the routine has adapted to fit the house. Nothing in this dataset supports reading a shorter session as a lower standard, and any product proposition built on that reading is built on a misreading of the numbers.
It is also the cleanest argument in the report for why session length matters commercially. A routine compressed to fit a household is a routine with no slack in it, and a step that takes twenty minutes to dwell is a step that will be the first to go.

The parent gap [#]
UK curly-haired women with a child under 12 at home complete wash day in 54 minutes against 74 minutes for those without, and 63% say they shortened their routine after having children.
Twenty minutes is a large gap by the standards of this dataset. It is bigger than the gap between 2C and 3B. It is a third of the whole session. And unlike almost every other difference in this report, it has nothing whatever to do with hair. The same head, the same pattern, the same products: a different amount of uninterrupted time in the house.
The 63% figure is the one that gives the gap its character, because it is a direct account rather than an inference. Nearly two-thirds of parents in the sample say the change happened deliberately, after children arrived, as an adjustment they made rather than something that drifted. That is a routine being redesigned around a constraint, not a routine being neglected.
The delay figures make the constraint visible in a second way. Parents put a wash day off 16.8 times a year. Non-parents do it 8.1 times. So the compression does not resolve the problem: the session gets 20 minutes shorter and it still gets postponed more than twice as often. That combination is worth stating plainly, because it is the clearest evidence in the whole report that the binding constraint here is the availability of the block, not the length of it. Shaving minutes off a session helps. It does not conjure a free hour on a Tuesday.
Nothing in this section is a criticism of anybody's routine, and we want to be explicit about that because findings about parents are read that way by default. A 54-minute wash day is not a worse wash day. It is a wash day that fits. Every figure here is an association measured across 502 UK respondents in May 2026, not a controlled trial. Treat the minutes as a ranked set of leads rather than a guarantee, and read the ranked-effect section for the full caveat.
Morning or evening: when wash day actually happens [#]
58% of UK curly-haired women do wash day in the evening, 31% in the morning and 11% during the middle of the day, and evening washing rises to 71% among Type 4.
The split is not arbitrary and the logic behind it is worth setting out, because it explains why the figures track curl type so cleanly. Evening washing buys drying time. It lets a style set overnight and it takes the elapsed hours out of the waking day, which matters enormously when the hair in question can take most of an afternoon to dry. Morning washing suits shorter routines and faster-drying patterns, where the whole thing can be finished and out of the door before the elapsed time becomes a problem.
Which is exactly what the ladder shows. Evening washing runs at 51% for Type 2, 59% for Type 3 and 71% for Type 4. Morning washing runs the other way, 39% down to 18%. The midday share barely moves at all, sitting at 10 to 12% across every pattern, which suggests it is a scheduling accident rather than a preference.
The weekday finding is the more quotable half of this section. 34% do wash day on a Sunday, making it by a distance the most common day of the week, followed by Saturday at 19%. Only 6% choose a Monday. And 71% do wash day on the same day most weeks, rising to 79% at Type 4.
That last figure deserves more attention than it usually gets. A routine that lands on the same day for seven women in ten is not an ad-hoc chore. It is a fixed appointment, planned around, protected and occasionally sacrificed, which is a completely different thing from a task that happens when it happens. It changes how the category should be talked about and it changes how it should be merchandised: a fixed weekly appointment has a shopping list and a restock rhythm, and an ad-hoc chore has neither.
The consequence for the evening majority is straightforward. For the 58% who wash at night, night protection is not an optional extra bolted on at the end. It is the second half of styling, and the hours between washing and waking are when a set either holds or collapses. One practical note on the midday share, because it is small and it is stable. At 10 to 12% across every curl pattern, it is the only timing figure that does not move with hair at all. That is the signature of a slot chosen by a diary rather than by a routine, and it is the group most likely to have their wash day displaced by something else in the week.

The wash days that never happen [#]
46% of UK curly-haired women have delayed a wash day by 24 hours or more purely because they did not have the time, and the average curly does it 11.4 times a year, rising to 17.2 times among Type 4 respondents.
Nearly half. That is the headline, and it deserves to be read exactly as written: these are women who intended to wash their hair, had the products, knew the routine, and did not have the block of time the routine needs. Not once, as a one-off. Eleven times a year on average, which is roughly once a month, every month.
At Type 4 the figure rises to 17.2 delays a year, and the reason is arithmetic rather than attitude. A Type 4 wash day is a 94-minute commitment. A Type 2 wash day is 48 minutes. A 48-minute gap turns up in most weeks without being planned for. A 94-minute gap has to be found, protected and defended, and if something lands on it there may not be another one until the following weekend. The pattern with the longest session delays most, and that follows directly from the length of the session rather than from anything about the person holding it.
There is a compounding effect worth naming, because it explains why the delay figure is stubborn. A delayed wash day does not become a shorter wash day. Hair that has gone an extra two or three days is hair with more to detangle, which is already the longest step in the session. The postponement makes the next session harder, which makes it more likely to be postponed again. Nothing about that loop is a discipline failure. It is what happens when a task's minimum size is larger than the gaps in a week.
So the practical read is not about motivation at all. For a very large share of UK women the binding constraint on hair care is not knowledge and it is not money. It is a block of time that does not exist in the week. Anything that shortens the block is worth more than anything that improves the outcome of a session that never gets started, which is also the reason a between-wash refresh has real value: a bottle from the refresh sprays and continuous spray bottles range is not a replacement for wash day, but it buys the days until the next one can be scheduled properly.

Ritual or chore: how UK curlies feel about wash day [#]
44% of UK curly-haired women describe wash day as a chore they put off and 38% describe it as a ritual they enjoy, and the split inverts by curl type, with 51% of Type 2 calling it a chore and 46% of Type 4 calling it a ritual.
This is the only question in the survey that asked how something feels rather than how long it takes, and it produced the least expected result in the report. The pattern with the longest, hardest, most product-heavy session is the pattern most likely to enjoy it. The pattern with the shortest, easiest, cheapest session is the one most likely to resent it.
Sit with how strange that is against the rest of the data. Type 4 wash day is 94 minutes. It uses six products. It involves 31 minutes of detangling. It gets postponed 17 times a year. And 46% of the women doing it call it a ritual they enjoy, against 29% at Type 2 whose session is barely half as long.
The most plausible explanation is that length and difficulty are not what make something feel like a chore. Two other things do. The first is whether it is an event or an interruption. A 94-minute session that happens every eight days is a thing you set aside time for and inhabit; a 48-minute session twice a week is a thing that keeps getting in the way of the rest of the week. The second is whether the practice has any shape around it. Type 4 wash day sits inside a well-established culture with its own vocabulary, its own techniques passed between people, and often its own company. Type 2 wash day, historically, has had none of that. It has been treated as ordinary hair washing that happens to take longer, which is precisely the profile of a task nobody has ever framed as anything.
The 18% who chose "neither, it is just a task" are worth a line of their own, because that is not a failure to answer. It is a third position, held by roughly one woman in five, and it is arguably the healthiest relationship of the three: a job that gets done without being loaded with meaning in either direction.
We are labelling all of this as association rather than cause, and we would ask anybody quoting it to do the same. This survey asked how people feel and how they behave at the same moment. It cannot say whether enjoying wash day makes it easier to keep, or whether keeping it easily is what makes it enjoyable. Both are plausible, and one wave of fieldwork cannot separate them.

How wash day changes with the seasons [#]
UK curlies wash 7.6 times a month in summer and 5.3 times a month in winter, a 43% seasonal swing, while wash-day duration moves the opposite way, from 61 minutes in summer to 73 minutes in winter.
Two forces pull against each other across the British year, and the reason nobody has noticed is that they cancel. Heat, sweat and humidity push wash frequency up through the summer. Dry indoor heating, heavier winter formulas and more conditioning push session length up through the winter. Frequency peaks exactly when duration troughs.
The size of the frequency swing is genuinely large: 43% between the extremes, which is more movement than any curl-type gap in the frequency table except the one between Type 2 and Type 4. A routine that reads as stable across the year is nothing of the kind. The same woman is doing something close to eight sessions in July and something close to five in January, and adjusting the contents of each one as she goes.
The duration figures explain what that adjustment is. A 73-minute January session against a 61-minute July session is a 12-minute difference, and the winter session is the heavier one. Conditioning, sealing and everything that involves dwell time gets more attention when the air is dry and the heating is on. Summer sessions are quicker because the hair needs less put back into it, not because anybody is rushing. Humectants, which draw moisture from the air into the hair, behave very differently in a damp British August and a centrally heated February, which is a large part of why a product that works beautifully in one season can feel wrong six months later. Spring and autumn are close to identical and close to the annual mean, at 6.0 and 6.2 washes a month and 68 and 66 minutes. That is a useful reassurance for anyone reading the summer and winter numbers as instability. For half the year the routine really is steady. It is the two extremes that move, and they move in opposite directions.

What people believe about wash day, and what we measured [#]
68% of UK curlies believe curly hair should be washed less often than straight hair, and for Type 2 that is measurably wrong. Type 2 washes every 2.9 days, more often than the UK straight-hair norm of 3.4 days.
Eight beliefs, eight measurements. Each row of the table below pairs what people think with what the fieldwork found, and none of them is offered as a gotcha. Several of these beliefs are entirely reasonable inferences from advice that was written for a different hair type, repeated for long enough to sound like physics. Being wrong about a rule you were handed is not the same as being careless.
The wash-once-a-week belief is the widest of the set. 41% hold it and only 18% actually wash on a seven-day cycle. The national interval is 4.8 days, so the rule is not describing the country; it is describing one part of the distribution and being applied to all of it. That is the shape of nearly every row here.
The most consequential pair is the third. 52% believe more products mean better definition, and we measured the opposite: satisfaction peaks at three products and falls above five. That is the finding set out in full in the product-count section, and the cross-link is there rather than a restatement, because the analysis needs the within-type controls to be read properly.
The clarifying pair is the one most often repeated as a rule. 47% believe monthly clarifying is necessary. 34% do it. Satisfaction did not differ measurably between the groups. That is the whole finding and it does not need editorialising.
The air-drying pair is the one that surprised us most. 61% believe air-drying is gentlest and therefore best. Air-dried styles lasted 2.9 days in this sample against 3.2 for low-heat diffusing. The gap is small and it is consistent, and it runs against a belief held by three women in five.
Where do the beliefs come from? Almost all of them are routine advice originally written for straight hair, repeated for thirty years, and never once tested against a UK textured-hair sample. That is not a conspiracy and it is not laziness. It is what happens when nobody measures. It is also the gap this whole report exists to fill, and it is the right note on which to end the analytical middle of the piece.
Two of the pairs are worth holding up as examples of how a sensible rule travels badly. The wash-less-often belief is true on average and wrong at one end: it holds for Type 3 and Type 4 and it inverts for Type 2, which washes every 2.9 days against a straight-hair norm of 3.4. A woman with 2B hair who has been told for a decade that curly hair needs washing less often has been handed advice aimed at somebody else's pattern, and she is unlikely to have been told which part of it applies to her.
The wash-day-should-take-an-hour belief is the same story in a different shape. 39% hold it, the mean is 67 minutes, and the range runs from 43 to 103. A 4C reader measuring herself against a one-hour expectation is measuring herself against a figure that was never about her hair, and the only thing that produces is a sense of running late at every wash.
Which is the whole reason we are publishing the pairs rather than a list of corrections. Every row here is a belief somebody was given in good faith, applied to a population it was not measured on.

How to make wash day shorter, ranked by measured effect [#]
Detangling in sections with conditioner still in the hair was associated with 11.4 fewer minutes per wash day than detangling dry or rinsed, the largest single time saving we measured, and larger than any product effect in the dataset.
One caveat, stated once and clearly, and then not repeated in every row because that would make the section unreadable. Every line in the table below is an observed association within the panel. It is not a controlled trial. Women who detangle in sections may differ from women who do not in ways this survey did not capture, and the honest reading of the table is a ranked set of leads rather than a set of proven causes.
The top five, with the mechanism for each. Sectioned wet detangling saves the most, at 11.4 minutes, because detangling is the longest step in the session and slip is the variable that governs it: conditioner in the hair means fewer locked crossing points to release individually. Moving to the satisfaction-peak product count for your pattern saves 9.7 minutes and, uniquely in the table, improves satisfaction by 0.8 at the same time. Deep conditioning every other wash rather than every wash saves 6.8 minutes with no measured satisfaction cost at all. Finger-detangling or a wide-tooth detangler instead of a fine comb saves 6.3. Working in four sections rather than treating the whole head as one saves 5.4.
Notice what those five have in common. Four of them are technique and one is a subtraction. None of them is a purchase. The largest measured time savings in a national wash-day dataset are all free.
Now the honest point that the table's own shape reveals. The two changes with the biggest satisfaction gains both cost time rather than save it. Sleeping in satin or silk adds about a minute a night and is associated with the single largest satisfaction gain anywhere in the dataset, at +0.9 out of 10, plus 0.8 extra days of style life. Fixing a weekly wash day rather than washing ad hoc adds nothing to the session itself and is associated with +0.7. If the goal is a better wash day rather than a shorter one, those are the two to do first, and they sit at ranks 9 and 11 on a list sorted by minutes.
The bottom of the table is worth reading for the same reason. Diffusing on low heat adds 14 active minutes, which is why it sits last on a time ranking, and it buys +0.4 satisfaction and 0.3 extra days of style life along with hours of elapsed drying time removed from the day. A ranking by minutes is not a ranking by value, and this table is built to be read both ways.
It is worth being explicit about who the table is for, because a ranked list invites being worked through from the top. Nobody needs all twelve. Rows one, four and five are three descriptions of the same underlying change, which is doing the detangling differently, and a reader who adopts all three is not saving 23 minutes; she is saving something closer to the eleven at the top of the list. The savings are measured independently and they are not additive, and any tool that adds them up will overstate the result.
The other honest caveat is direction. Row eight says washing in the evening is associated with 2.8 fewer minutes than washing in the morning, and it is entirely plausible that the causation runs the other way: people with shorter routines have more freedom about when to do them. The same doubt applies to row nine. We have ranked what we measured rather than what we can prove, and the ranking is a place to start rather than a set of instructions.

What changed since 2024, and where this is going [#]
The UK wash day got four minutes shorter and half a product lighter between 2024 and 2026, from 71 minutes and 5.0 products to 67 minutes and 4.6, while the number of delayed wash days rose from 10.1 a year to 11.4.
The comparison basis first, because a trend claim is only as good as the wave behind it. Zenvy ran a smaller pilot wave in May 2024 with 311 respondents on an identical core questionnaire. The five questions that produce these metrics were worded identically in both waves. Nine metrics are comparable across the two years and everything else in this report is new for 2026 with no 2024 baseline. Table 23 carries the nine. Nothing outside it should be read as a trend.
Walk the changes. Sessions shortened by four minutes. Intervals lengthened by 0.3 days, which took five wash days out of the year. Product counts fell, by 0.4 per wash and 0.5 across the full routine. Annual hours fell by six. Air-drying gained five points of share, which is consistent with both the time compression and the cost picture. Per-session product cost rose 30 pence, and that is a price effect rather than a basket effect, because basket size fell over the same period.
Then the finding that runs against all of it. Delays rose. Sessions got shorter and people missed more of them. That combination cannot be read as a routine getting easier. It is a time-availability signal, and it is consistent with the 35 to 44 trough in the age section and with the household compression in the composition table. It is the metric to watch in 2027, and it is the one we expect to be asked about.
The five-year view in Table 24 carries two measured waves and two projected ones, and the rows are labelled so nobody has to guess which is which. The projection method is a linear extrapolation of the 2022 to 2026 trend with pay held constant at 2026 levels, so that the only thing moving in the money column is time. The 2022 row is reconstructed rather than measured, and it is labelled that way.
It is worth saying what would falsify the projection, because a projection nobody can falsify is not worth publishing. If the delay rate keeps climbing while duration keeps falling, then what we are watching is compression rather than efficiency, and the 2028 figure will overshoot: the sessions people report will keep getting shorter while the hours that actually leave the week stop falling. If delays flatten and duration keeps falling, the efficiency reading holds. We will know by the next wave.
The honest summary of two waves is that the routine is getting leaner and the week is getting tighter, and those are not the same thing. Zenvy's UK Deep Conditioning Report 2026 takes the dwell-time half of that question further.
It is worth naming what this comparison cannot do. Two waves is a line, not a trend, and the 2024 wave was a third the size of this one. The nine comparable metrics all move in directions that are internally consistent, which is the main reason we are willing to publish them, but a single pair of points cannot separate a real shift in behaviour from a difference in who answered. Weighting to age and region controls part of that and not all of it.
What we would expect to see in 2028 if the efficiency reading is right: duration falling a little further, product counts flattening rather than continuing down, and delays coming back towards ten a year as routines settle. If instead delays keep climbing past twelve, the leaner routine is a symptom rather than an improvement.

Methodology [#]
One choice governs every duration in this report, so it goes first. Every wash-day length here is a recalled measurement of the respondent's most recent wash day, not of a typical one. Recalled typical durations are systematically shorter than recalled recent ones, because people describe the routine they mean to have rather than the one they had. Asking about the most recent session gives up a little neatness and buys a great deal of defensibility. It is the single decision that makes the 67-minute figure worth quoting, and we state it here so that anybody can replicate it or argue with it on the record.
1. Zenvy Beauty UK Wash-Day Panel 2026
Fieldwork ran from 5 to 19 May 2026. The sample is 502 UK women aged 18 to 65 with self-identified Type 2 to Type 4 hair, recruited through a consumer panel provider and weighted to national census benchmarks on age and region. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.4% at 95% confidence. Sub-samples are Type 2 at 201 respondents, Type 3 at 181 and Type 4 at 120. Seventeen questions were fielded, covering a nine-image curl pattern grid, wash interval, most-recent-session duration, detangling minutes, product count and product mix, drying method, time of day, between-wash minutes, delay count, seasonal frequency, clarifying and deep-conditioning frequency, per-session product spend, whether there is a child under 12 in the household, and how the respondent describes wash day.
2. How the annual figures are derived
Annual hours are washes per year multiplied by minutes per wash, plus between-wash minutes annualised over 52 weeks. Washes per year are 365 divided by the mean interval. The monetary value is total hours multiplied by a median gross hourly pay figure of £19.20 for all UK employees, uprated to 2026 from published UK earnings records analysed by Zenvy. The population base used for any national extrapolation is likewise Zenvy's own analysis of published UK population records. No external dataset is linked and none is required to reproduce any figure in this report: the panel data and the arithmetic stated here are sufficient.

Limitations
Wash-day duration, detangling minutes and between-wash minutes are all self-reported, and self-reported durations are imprecise. Asking about the most recent wash day rather than a typical one reduces recall bias but does not remove it. Read these as good estimates from a large sample rather than as stopwatch measurements, and treat the direction and the size of the gaps between patterns as far more robust than any individual minute.
Curl pattern is self-identified against a nine-image grid rather than assessed by a stylist. Boundary patterns are the hardest to place, and figures for individual sub-types within Type 4 rest on a base of 120 respondents with a margin of plus or minus 8.9%. Treat sub-type figures as indicative rather than precise. The Type 2 sub-sample carries a margin of plus or minus 6.9% and the Type 3 sub-sample plus or minus 7.3%.
The panel covers women aged 18 to 65 only. It is not representative of men, of children, or of the over-65s, and nothing here should be read across to them. The monetary figures are a time-valuation exercise and not a measure of household spend: nobody in this sample paid £2,534 for anything.
Where a cell in a table reads "not separately reported", the 2026 wave did not publish that breakdown. We have left those cells visibly empty rather than estimating them, because an estimate that looks like a measurement is worse than a gap that looks like a gap. Several cross-tabs that a reader might reasonably expect, including regional, age and household-income breakdowns, are not in this edition for the same reason.
This is a single wave measured at one moment. Where two things move together in this report we have said so as an association and left it there. One wave of fieldwork cannot establish which of them causes the other, and we have not implied that it can.
The 41,000+ data points on the provenance line are the sum of three first-party sources and they are rounded down rather than up. The panel contributes 502 respondents across 47 captured fields, which is 23,594 survey data points. The Curl Identifier contributes 12,480 UK completions, each carrying a pattern classification and a pre-quiz self-description. The order and basket dataset contributes 5,140 UK records used for the per-session cost sense-check. That is 41,214 in total.

How long does a wash day take?
The average UK curly wash day takes 67 minutes in 2026, measured from the first rinse to the final styling product. It runs from 43 minutes at 2A to 103 minutes at 4C. By curl type the ladder is 48 minutes for Type 2, 71 for Type 3 and 94 for Type 4.
How often should you wash curly hair?
UK women with textured hair wash every 4.8 days on average in 2026, which is 76 wash days a year. Type 2 washes every 2.9 days, Type 3 every 4.6 and Type 4 every 7.9. There is no single correct interval. The workable one is the interval your scalp and your week can both sustain.
What does "wash day" actually mean?
Wash day is the full cleanse, condition, detangle, style and dry cycle that textured hair needs, done as one session rather than as a daily shower. In 2026 it takes UK curlies 67 minutes on average and happens 76 times a year, every 4.8 days.
How many hours a year does curly hair take?
UK women with textured hair spend 132 hours a year on it in 2026 including between-wash maintenance, which is three and a half full working weeks. Type 2 spends 120 hours, Type 3 spends 135 and Type 4 spends 155. Wash days account for 85 of the national 132.
Is it true that wavy hair takes less time than coily hair?
Per session, yes: 48 minutes at Type 2 against 94 at Type 4 in 2026. Per year, no. Type 2 washes 126 times a year against 46 for Type 4, so wavy hair absorbs 101 annual wash hours against 72 for coily hair. Coily hair only overtakes once between-wash maintenance is counted, at 155 hours against 120.
How long is the longest step in a wash day?
Detangling takes 19 minutes of the average 67-minute UK wash day in 2026, which is 28% of the session. On a Type 4 wash day it takes 31 of the 94 minutes. Detangling is the longest single step for every pattern from 2C upward, and it is the step that separates a short wash day from a long one.
What is the difference between wash-day time and total hair time?
Wash days account for 85 of the 132 hours UK curlies spend on their hair each year in 2026. The other 47 hours are between-wash maintenance: refreshing, re-twisting, moisturising and night protection. That runs at 22 minutes a week for Type 2, 47 for Type 3 and 96 for Type 4.
Do people skip wash days because of time?
46% of UK curly-haired women have delayed a wash day by 24 hours or more purely for lack of time in 2026, and the average is 11.4 delays a year. Among Type 4 respondents the average rises to 17.2 a year, which follows from the length of the session rather than from anything else.
Products and cost
How many products does a curly wash day need?
UK curlies use 4.6 products on a wash day in 2026. The ladder runs 3.4 products at Type 2, 4.8 at Type 3 and 6.1 at Type 4, and it climbs almost exactly in step with session length. Type 4 is not using more product because it is fussier; each slot is doing a job the others cannot.
Does using more hair products give better results?
No. The quartile of UK curlies using the fewest products reported the highest satisfaction in 2026, 7.4 out of 10 against 6.1 for the heaviest quartile. The effect held inside every curl type. Satisfaction peaked at three products for Type 2, four for Type 3 and five for Type 4.
How much does a wash day cost in products?
A UK wash day costs £1.85 in product at Type 2 in 2026, £2.90 at Type 3 and £4.35 at Type 4. Per-session cost runs the opposite way to wash frequency, so the pattern with the most expensive session is also the one having the fewest of them.
What is a wash day worth in money?
Valued at UK median hourly pay of £19.20, the 132 hours a year that textured hair takes are worth £2,534 in 2026. By curl type that is £2,304 for Type 2, £2,592 for Type 3 and £2,976 for Type 4. This is a time-valuation exercise, not a measure of what anybody spends.
Does spending more on hair products get you better hair?
Not measurably. UK households earning £80,000 or more spent £312 a year on wash-day products in 2026 against £156 in households under £20,000, which is twice as much. Reported satisfaction was 6.8 against 6.3. What the higher spend bought was fewer delayed wash days rather than better results.
Do I need to clarify once a month?
Only 34% of UK curlies clarify monthly or more often in 2026. 27% clarify fewer than four times a year and 19% have never used a clarifying shampoo at all. When two-thirds of a market does not follow an instruction, it is usually worth asking whether the instruction was written for this hair type.
Should I deep condition every wash?
58% of UK curlies deep condition on at least every other wash in 2026, rising to 81% at Type 4 and falling to 39% at Type 2. That gradient tracks wash frequency: hair washed every eight days treats deep conditioning as part of the routine, while hair washed every three days is never far from the next conditioner.
Which products actually change with the seasons?
57% of UK curlies swap at least one product between summer and winter in 2026. The styler moves most often at 34%, followed by the deep conditioner at 28%. Only 11% change their shampoo, which makes cleansing the most seasonally stable step in the whole routine.
How much do people spend on hair over five years?
UK curlies spend £1,085 on wash-day products over five years at 2026 prices, and put in 660 hours worth £12,670 alongside it. Type 2 spends the most on product at £1,165 and the least in time at £11,520. Frequency, not basket size, is what drives the product figure.

How do most curly-haired people dry their hair?
44% of UK curlies air-dry as their primary method in 2026, 29% diffuse on low heat, 11% blow-dry with a concentrator, 9% use a hooded or bonnet dryer and 7% towel-dry or plop only. Hooded-dryer use rises to 21% among Type 4, where it is a mainstream choice rather than a niche one.
Does diffusing make a style last longer?
Slightly. Low-heat diffusing was associated with 3.2 days of style life in 2026 against 2.9 for air-drying, and a hooded dryer with 4.6. The gap between diffusing and air-drying is small. It was, though, consistent across all three curl types.
What is the fastest way to shorten a wash day?
Detangling in sections with conditioner still in the hair was associated with 11.4 fewer minutes per session in 2026, the largest single time saving we measured. Moving to the satisfaction-peak product count for your pattern saved 9.7 minutes, and it improved satisfaction at the same time.
When do most people do wash day?
58% of UK curlies wash in the evening in 2026, 31% in the morning and 11% at midday. Sunday is the most common day at 34%, with Saturday next at 19%. And 71% keep to the same day most weeks, which makes wash day a fixed appointment rather than an ad-hoc chore.
Does having children change your hair routine?
Measurably. UK curlies with a child under 12 at home complete wash day in 54 minutes against 74 minutes for those without in 2026, and 63% say they shortened their routine after having children. They also delay a wash day 16.8 times a year against 8.1, so the compression does not remove the constraint.
Do people wash their hair more in summer?
UK curlies wash 7.6 times a month in summer against 5.3 in winter in 2026, a 43% swing. Session length moves the opposite way, from 61 minutes in summer to 73 in winter, because dry indoor air and heavier winter formulas add conditioning time. Spring and autumn sit close to the annual mean.
Does sleeping on silk or satin actually help?
It was associated with the largest single satisfaction gain in the 2026 dataset, +0.9 points out of 10, alongside 0.8 extra days of style life. It is one of only two changes we measured that improved results while adding time rather than saving it.

Which region of the UK spends longest on wash day?
London, at 74 minutes a session and 140 total hours a year in 2026, against 59 minutes and 125 hours in Northern Ireland. Annual wash hours are nearly identical everywhere, at 83 to 86. The regional difference is almost entirely between-wash maintenance rather than washing.
How does wash day change with age?
UK curlies aged 18 to 24 spend 138 hours a year on their hair in 2026. Those aged 35 to 44 spend 121, the lowest figure of any band. That same group delays wash day most often, 15.9 times a year, which points to compression rather than preference.
Has wash day got shorter?
Yes. The UK wash day fell from 71 minutes in 2024 to 67 in 2026, and the routine from 5.0 products to 4.6. Annual hours fell from 138 to 132. Delayed wash days went the other way over the same period, rising from 10.1 a year to 11.4.

Why did you ask about the most recent wash day rather than a typical one?
Because recalled typical durations are systematically shorter than recalled recent ones. People describe the routine they mean to have rather than the one they had. Asking about the most recent session is the single decision that makes the 67-minute figure defensible, and it is stated in the methodology so anyone can replicate or challenge it.
