Peppermint in a scalp oil does one obvious thing: it makes the scalp feel cool and awake for a few minutes after you apply it. Some people find that tingle soothing on an itchy scalp, others cannot stand it. Worth knowing which camp you are in before buying.

Underneath the peppermint this is standard Sunny Isle. Thick Jamaican black castor oil, three ingredients, nothing padding it out. The castor oil is heavy, so on fine hair it belongs on the scalp and roots only. Denser textures can take it through the lengths as a pre-wash treatment.

At 4 oz it lasts a while, since the format wants a few drops parted into sections rather than a palmful. Best for type 3 and type 4 hair, and for anyone who likes a cooling scalp routine on wash day.

Application tips

Pour two or three drops straight onto an exposed parting, work along the row with your fingertips, then move to the next one. Four rows covers most heads.

Massage for a couple of minutes rather than a quick rub. Leave it in if you are oiling between washes, or give it an hour before shampooing if you would rather not carry oil around all day.

Results

The cool hit arrives within seconds and holds for a few minutes before fading to nothing at all.

Underneath that, the oil stays on the scalp instead of sliding down to the ends, which is exactly what you want from a scalp product. Roots look glossier and the skin feels less tight the following day.

Composition

Jamaican Black Castor Oil
Thick enough to stay on the scalp rather than running
