900ml with a pump on top, which puts this in household territory rather than handbag territory. If more than one person in the house has damaged hair, the maths works.

The formula runs on keratin, ginseng and collagen. Keratin and collagen are both proteins, and they are there to reinforce the structure of hair that has been bleached, relaxed or heat-styled past the point where it holds together on its own. Ginseng conditions the scalp while the lengths get the protein.

What you should notice is hair that feels smoother between the fingers, tangles less and takes a brush without leaving broken pieces behind. It is designed to run alongside the matching Dexe Repair Shampoo, and protein systems do work better used as a pair.

Apply after shampooing, concentrate on the lengths and ends rather than the roots, leave a couple of minutes, then rinse thoroughly. On very damaged hair, use it at every wash for a month and then ease back.

Protein conditioners follow the same rule whatever the brand. Use them while the hair needs them and stop when it does not, because hair loaded with protein and short of moisture behaves much like damaged hair anyway: rough, stiff and quick to snap. If that happens, switch to a plain moisturising conditioner for a fortnight and let it recover.

Application tips

Two pumps for short hair, four to six if it falls past the shoulders. Rake it through with your fingers first and only then reach for a comb, because a wide tooth moving through conditioned hair does far less damage than one moving through bare wet hair.

Work from the ends up. Rinse in cooler water than you washed in. If your roots go flat easily, keep it off the top inch entirely.

Results

Hair that was catching and tearing starts behaving. Knots loosen instead of tightening under the comb, and what collects on the teeth is loose shed hair rather than snapped pieces.

The lengths feel smooth and dense rather than slippery, which is the difference between protein conditioning and a plain silicone rinse. Fine hair may find it heavy, so use less before deciding it does not suit.
