Dark brown, henna based, ammonia free.

  • Rich dark brown with 100% grey coverage
  • Henna base conditions the hair through the colouring step
  • No ammonia in the formula
  • Permanent colour rather than a wash out tint

Ammonia is what opens the cuticle in a conventional permanent dye, and taking it out changes the result. The colour sits closer to the surface, the hair keeps more of its own texture, and there is none of the ammonia smell to deal with in a small bathroom. What you give up is lift, so this darkens and covers but will not go lighter.

Best for anyone maintaining a dark brown, covering grey on a dark base, or moving away from chemical colour without going straight back to their natural.

Expect a longer processing time than a box dye asks for, and expect the colour to deepen over the day or two after you rinse. Judging henna straight out of the shower is how people talk themselves into thinking it has not worked.

Application tips

Do a strand test before the whole head, particularly if your hair is already coloured or has any henna history. Dark brown goes darker than the swatch on hair that is porous.

Once you are happy, work through pre-parted sections with a brush, greys first, and time it from when the last section is covered rather than the first. Rinse until the water runs clean.

Results

A dark brown that reads as hair rather than as dye, with warmth in it rather than the flat matte black that cheap permanent colour drifts towards. Grey is covered fully and evenly.

Because the base is henna and there is no ammonia in it, hair comes out conditioned instead of squeaky, and the shine is the giveaway. It grows out at the root rather than fading uniformly.
