That is the difference worth knowing about, because 10 vol is the developer most colourists get through fastest: toning, tone on tone work, grey blending, and any application where the shade needs depositing rather than lifting. At 3% you are looking at one to two levels of lift at most, which is the intention. Colour goes on true to tone, greys take evenly, and the hair is not pushed harder than the job needs. The cream base blends smoothly into tint and stays put through the processing time.

Application tips
Pour off what a single job needs and reseal the litre rather than working out of the big bottle.
Ten volume mixes into most permanent colours and toners at the ratio those products specify. Stir to a smooth cream, apply to dry unwashed hair unless the colour says otherwise, and work section by section so timing stays even across the head. Patch test 48 hours ahead. Gloves throughout.
Results
One to two levels of lift, which is enough for toning, grey coverage and a shade shift without taking hair anywhere near blonde.
The gentler reaction is easier on the strand and on the scalp than a higher volume, so it suits regular root work. A litre lasts, provided the cap goes back on and it lives somewhere cool and dark rather than on a sunny windowsill.
