That is the difference worth knowing about, because 10 vol is the developer most colourists get through fastest: toning, tone on tone work, grey blending, and any application where the shade needs depositing rather than lifting. At 3% you are looking at one to two levels of lift at most, which is the intention. Colour goes on true to tone, greys take evenly, and the hair is not pushed harder than the job needs. The cream base blends smoothly into tint and stays put through the processing time.
