Work in sections, take the styler down the length slowly, and let each section cool on the barrel before you release it. That last step is where the volume actually sets.
Two practical notes. Attachments come off hot, so give them a minute before you swap. And on thick or long hair this works better as the second half of the job, once a towel and a few minutes of air drying have taken the worst of the water out, rather than straight from soaking wet.

Application tips
Towel the hair until it is damp rather than wet, then work in sections about the width of the barrel. Anything thicker and the middle stays wet. Start at the roots and hold for a few seconds for lift, then draw the barrel down and roll the ends under at the last moment. Heat protectant first if you use one. Swap attachments only once the unit has gone cold in your hand.
Results
Fine hair is where the difference shows most. It gets body at the root without being blown flat, and the ends stay under instead of flicking out.
The finish is smooth and reflective, with less static than a brush and a dryer used separately. One pass usually does it, which means less total heat on the hair across a week of drying.
