Ventilating a wig is slow, close work, and the tool you use decides how the hairline turns out. This is a ventilating needle: a fine metal hook on a shaped handle, used to knot hair into lace one strand or one small group at a time.

Application tips
Mount the lace on a block or a loom and keep it taut. Push the hook through from underneath, catch one or two strands folded over the tip, draw them back through and pull the knot closed against the mesh.
Work in rows from the nape forward, thinning down to single strands as you reach the front. Keep the hook clean and store it point down so the tip has nothing to catch on.
Results
Knots sit small and flat, so the finished lace lies against the skin without a ridge running along the parting.
Density can be graded, light at the temples and heavier behind, and that gradient is what stops a unit announcing itself at arm's length. On a repair, a thin patch fills back in to match everything around it instead of reading as a mend.
