Burgundy is a red that has to be maintained. Red pigment sits closer to the surface of the hair than brown or black does, and it washes out first. 4.26 answers that with a cool violet running under the red, the tone that holds longest and stops the shade turning orange as it goes.

The kit is a full at home permanent: colour, developer, and the high shine elixir that mixes into the colour rather than sitting on top of it afterwards. Up to eight weeks is what the shade is rated for.

The violet reflect behaves differently depending on where you start. On a mid brown it stays deep and wine toned. On a lighter base it lifts brighter and more obviously red. Either way, a colour safe shampoo and cooler water will stretch it further than the box promises.

Application is the usual permanent routine. Mix, section, work root to tip, leave for the stated time, rinse until the water runs clear. With reds it pays to rinse for longer than feels necessary, because leftover pigment is what stains a pillowcase on the first night.

For anyone wanting a red with depth in it rather than a bright fashion shade.

Application tips

Gloves, an old towel and something over the sink. Red and violet pigments stain, so barrier cream along the hairline is worth the minute. Allergy alert test first, as the leaflet directs.

Apply to dry hair in sections, roots first if you are going darker, mid-lengths first if you are refreshing an existing burgundy. Rinse in cool water until the run-off loses its colour, and condition before you dry.

Results

Deep burgundy with a cool violet lean rather than an orange one, which keeps it looking expensive instead of brassy.

In low light it reads almost brown, then throws red when the sun catches it. The gloss is high, the tone even, and it holds its saturation for weeks before it starts to soften.

Composition

The full INCI is printed on the pack. We publish it here as soon as the brand supplies it, and we will read it off the bottle for you if you ask.
