Fine hair goes flat for a simple reason. There is less of it, and each strand is narrower than it looks in the mirror. Conditioner usually makes that worse, since anything rich enough to soften also weighs the hair down.

Fibrology is L'Oreal's answer to that problem. The conditioner carries Filloxane, a patented molecule that works on the thickness of the hair fibre itself rather than coating it, so hair feels denser without the flatness a heavy conditioner leaves behind. It is aimed squarely at fine and thinning hair, and 400ml is enough to find out whether it suits you over a few months of washes.

Use it as you would any conditioner, on the lengths after shampooing. If your hair is fine at the roots but longer through the ends, keep it away from the scalp and concentrate on the mid-lengths, where the weight will not cost you anything.

Application tips

Fine hair needs less product than the bottle implies. A ten pence coin covers shoulder-length hair, and going beyond that undoes the point of a thickening conditioner.

Leave it a minute, no longer. Rinse cool, then blot with a towel instead of rubbing, and let the hair dry most of the way before a brush goes near it. Fine strands break easily when wet, and no conditioner compensates for rough handling.

Results

The hair feels denser in the hand rather than merely smoother, which is the difference between this and a conditioner that softens by coating.

Volume survives the dry-off. Roots lift the way they would with nothing on the hair at all, and the lengths still comb out clean. Expect the change to build over several weeks rather than land in a single wash.
