Design Essentials Honey & Shea Edge Tamer 2.3oz
A 2.3oz pot of edge control fits in a bag, which is rather the point. Edges need topping up, and usually somewhere that is not your bathroom.
The formula is honey and shea butter over castor oil, so it conditions the hairline while it lays it down. Honey holds moisture in and keeps the hair soft under the hold. Shea softens and protects the fine hair around the temples, which is the first hair to break when a gel dries it out. The hold lasts, it stays flexible, and it does not flake or crumble as the day goes on.
The smaller pot is also the sensible way to try an edge control you have not used before, since edges are personal and what lays one hairline flat will slide straight off another. It suits textured, coily and afro hair, and it covers braids, ponytails, updos and anything else that needs a clean edge. Smooth on, brush into shape, then wrap for a few minutes to set.

Application tips
Start with less than a pea. Edge control is the one product where people consistently use four times what they need, and the excess is what flakes off later.
Melt it on a fingertip, press it into the hairline, then brush in the direction you want the hair to lie. Swoops and baby hairs come last, using the very tip of the brush. Wrap and leave for a few minutes.
Results
Edges lie flat and stay flat, holding through a full day without needing a top-up at lunchtime. The hold has some flex in it, so the hair moves rather than sitting rigid.
Nothing crumbles, nothing goes white, and the hairline still feels soft when you take a scarf off. That last part is what stops repeated laying from wearing the edges down over months.
Composition
- Honey
- Keeps the hairline supple rather than parched under a firm hold
- Shea Butter
- Softens the edge hair as it sets, so laying it does less harm
