This is the step people skip after a relaxer.

It is also the one that decides how the next six weeks go. Relaxing leaves hair chemically alkaline and structurally softened, and a reconstructor is what brings the pH back down and puts conditioning agents into the cortex before the damage compounds. Affirm build this one around argan, pequi and buriti oils with fibrous conditioning agents, in a 950 ml salon bottle.

  • Normalises hair after a chemical service, which is a required step rather than a bonus one
  • Rebuilds conditioning inside the fibre rather than only coating it
  • Cuts the breakage that follows an unbalanced relaxer
  • Works on fine and limp hair as well as on dry and damaged hair

It also stands on its own as a weekly deep conditioner between services. Apply to clean, towel-dried hair, comb it through, leave it the time the instructions give, then rinse.

32 oz is a professional size, so it makes most sense in a salon or in a household that relaxes regularly. For one person relaxing three or four times a year, a smaller bottle of the same product is the more sensible buy.

Application tips

Decant into a smaller bottle for home use, since a 950 ml salon jug is unwieldy over a basin.

It goes on after the neutralising shampoo, never before, and the hair wants to be damp rather than dripping. Work in four sections, a walnut sized amount each, and give it heat under a cap if the hair is badly worn. Rinse warm, then finish cool.

Results

The stretchy, over soft feel that follows a chemical service firms up. Strands take tension from a comb without giving way, and wet detangling stops leaving a handful in the basin.

Between services it reads as a heavy weekly conditioner. Ends look less frayed, hair holds a set better, and a relaxer taken later goes on more evenly across the length.

Composition

Argan Oil
Softens the length and takes the rough edge off chemically processed hair
Pequi Oil
A Brazilian fruit oil that adds slip, so combing does not tug
Buriti Oil
Rich orange oil that conditions dry ends and lifts dullness
