Satin's advantage is its surface. It is smooth enough that hair does not catch on it, so a brushed pattern stays brushed, and it does not soak up the oils and moisturisers you worked through beforehand. Cotton does the opposite on both counts, which is why a pillowcase is no substitute.

Application tips
Brush first, then cover. The pattern only sets in the direction the bristles left it, so a durag pulled over unbrushed hair holds nothing worth holding.
Centre the seam, pull the panel flat across the front, and tie the tails behind with a second knot if the first slips. Ten minutes on the sofa does very little. Overnight, or a few hours at a stretch, is where the compression earns its place.
Results
Deeper, more even waves, because the hair spends the night lying where you put it rather than being shoved around by a pillowcase. Oils and moisturisers you applied earlier are still on the hair in the morning instead of in the bedding. Less roughing up means fewer snapped ends, and shine holds because the cuticle stays flat.
