Henna colours differently to a conventional dye.

Rather than opening the cuticle and depositing pigment inside, it coats the outside of the strand, which is why it adds body and shine as a side effect of colouring. Colour For Me's brown is a plant-based henna, 200g, with no ammonia and no PPD. Grey coverage is the main reason people buy it, and it manages that without stripping the natural oil out of the hair the way a synthetic permanent does. Henna runs warm by nature, so expect the brown to land on the warm side rather than ashy.

Mix, apply to clean dry hair, and leave it for the time given on the pack. The colour deepens over the first couple of days after rinsing rather than showing its final tone straight away.

Application tips

Patch test behind the ear 48 hours ahead, and take a strand test from underneath, because henna sits over whatever colour is already there and the result depends on your starting shade.

Gloves on, mix in a non-metal bowl to the instructions on the pack, then work from the roots down in sections. Cover with a cap while it develops. Rinse with water until it runs clear and leave shampoo until the next day.

Results

Brown comes out as a warm, natural-looking depth rather than a flat block, and it varies slightly across the head because your own base shows through.

Grey takes the colour and blends into the brown, often a shade or two lighter than the rest, which is how henna covers. The hair feels thicker between the fingers.

Henna coats the strand, so shine improves and the texture reads more substantial.
