Type 2 — Wave

Wavy hair products.

Wavy hair sits between straight and curly — type 2 patterns range from loose body waves (2A) through to defined S-shapes (2C). The trick is bringing the wave forward without flattening it. We've curated the lightweight curl creams, anti-humidity sprays and volumising mousses that work for wavy textures: enough hold to keep the bend, never enough weight to drag it out.

About this collection

Zenvy's complete wavy-hair collection — every product curated for type 2 textures (2A, 2B, 2C). Lightweight stylers, foaming mousses, defining gels, and anti-humidity polymers specifically engineered for wave pattern, not weighed-down wavy.

Type 2 wavy characteristics

Type 2 hair has S-pattern waves rather than spiral curls. 2A is loosest (subtle waves), 2B is mid-range (defined waves), 2C is tightest (wave-spiral hybrid). Most wavies have straight or slightly-wavy roots, with wave pattern emerging from mid-shaft to ends. Common challenge: products designed for curlies weigh waves down into a flat, stringy texture.

Why wavies need lighter products

Wave pattern is gravity-sensitive. Heavy curl creams and butters (designed for type 3-4 density) pull wavy hair down into curtain-like flatness. Wavies need lightweight stylers: foaming mousses, gel-cream hybrids, water-based leave-ins, polymer-based humidity gels. Heavy oils, butters, and waxes should be avoided.

UK wave care by season

UK summer (high humidity): polymer-based anti-humidity gel (The Doux Silent Treatment) over light mousse. Skip glycerin-heavy products — pulls atmospheric moisture into the cuticle and pops wave flat. UK winter (low indoor humidity): light leave-in spray + light cream-gel combo. Heavy cream still kills wave; light moisture works.

The wavy styling routine

Sulphate-free shampoo (lightweight). Condition mid-lengths to ends only. Squish-to-condish in shower. Apply leave-in to soaking wet hair. Apply mousse OR light cream OR gel — usually just one styler for waves, not three. Plop 5-10 min (no longer — wavy hair gets squashed). Diffuse on low or air-dry.

What's in this collection

Lightweight mousses (Innersense I Create Volume, Bounce Curl Defining Hair Mousse), gel-cream hybrids (Bounce Curl Light Creme Gel), anti-humidity polymers (The Doux Silent Treatment), satin pillowcases, and wavy-specific sulphate-free shampoos. Free UK delivery over £25.

Wave pattern reveal: what to expect in first 4 weeks

If you're new to wavy hair care and have been using silicone-heavy products or daily heat, expect pattern reveal over 2-4 weeks of consistent routine. Week 1: hair feels different (lighter, slightly drier as silicones wash out). Week 2: some wave pattern visible. Week 3: defined wave appears at mid-shaft and ends. Week 4: full pattern emerges. Don't over-style during this transition — let your natural pattern develop without forcing it.

The squish-to-condish technique for waves

While conditioner is in your hair in the shower, cup water in your palms and squish upward into wave sections — from ends toward roots. This encourages wave clump formation before you even apply styling product. Particularly effective for type 2B-2C wavy hair that struggles to clump. Don't comb through the squished sections afterward — keeps the clumps intact.

Why wavies often have flat roots

Wave pattern + hair length = gravity flatness at the roots. Wave is naturally less voluminous at the scalp than spiral curls. Solutions: clip-rooting (small metal clips at the roots while drying), upside-down diffusing for the first 5 minutes, root-pumping with diffuser cup. Avoid teasing or back-combing — disturbs cuticle and creates frizz that doesn't match the wave pattern.

Common type 2 mistakes

Mistake 1: using products designed for type 3-4. Heavy butters and creams kill wave pattern. Mistake 2: scrunching too aggressively. Wave is delicate; gentle scrunching from ends toward scalp is enough. Mistake 3: skipping the leave-in. Even waves benefit from a moisture base under the styler. Mistake 4: brushing waves dry. Brushing breaks the clump pattern and creates frizz. Detangle in conditioner only.

Building a wavy routine that lasts 3-5 days

Day 1 wash routine: sulphate-free shampoo (lightweight), conditioner (light to medium), squish-to-condish, leave-in spray, mousse or light gel-cream, scrunch upward, plop 5 min, air-dry or diffuse on low. Day 2: pineapple all night (loose high topknot in satin scrunchie), morning spritz of water + leave-in mix, scrunch back into shape. Day 3-4: same as day 2 with optional dry-shampoo at roots. Day 5: wash day again.

Frequently asked

Am I wavy or curly?
Wave pattern with no spiral or ringlet = type 2. Defined spiral curls or ringlets = type 3. If you have a mix (some waves, some spirals), you're likely 2C, the borderline.
Why does my wavy hair look stringy?
Almost always product overload. Cut amount in half. Use mousse instead of cream. Skip heavy oils and butters. Waves need light products to maintain S-pattern.
Best UK wave product under £20?
Bounce Curl Light Creme Gel (£17) — lightweight, works for 2A-2C. Or Innersense I Create Volume mousse (£20) — even lighter, best for 2A.
Can wavies do the curly girl method?
Yes — works particularly well for wavies because removing silicones reveals wave pattern that's often weighed down. Expect 2-4 week transition before seeing your true wave.
Best UK wavy hair starter kit under £30?
Bounce Curl Light Creme Gel (£17) + Kitsch Satin Pillowcase (£15) = £32. Covers daily styling + overnight protection.
How often should wavy hair wash?
2-3 times per week. Type 2 hair has the most sebum reach down the strand, so daily washing isn't necessary. Skip days with dry shampoo or refresh spray.
Why do my waves drop overnight?
Friction + gravity. Pineapple in a satin scrunchie, satin pillowcase. Day-2 refresh: water spray + a few drops of leave-in, finger-twist flat sections.
Best UK anti-humidity for waves?
The Doux Silent Treatment 30-Day Anti-Humidity Spray (£18). Light polymer barrier that doesn't add weight. Apply over a finished wave style.
Should I diffuse or air-dry waves?
Air-drying gives soft natural waves but more frizz. Diffusing gives volume and definition but can disturb cuticle if too high heat. Hover-don't-cup, low heat, low airflow.
Best UK leave-in for wavy hair?
Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave-in (£15), Bounce Curl Avocado & Rose Cream (£20). Both lightweight, won't weigh waves down.
Can waves use rice water?
Once monthly maximum. Type 2 doesn't usually need protein-heavy treatments. Save for occasional protein boost only if waves feel limp.
Best UK wavy hair products for hard water?
Curlsmith Wash & Scrub Detox monthly + Innersense Hydrating Cream Hairbath weekly. Clarifying every 3-4 weeks prevents mineral build-up that weighs waves down.
Will I lose volume with curl products?
Possible with heavy products. Use lighter formulas: mousse, gel-cream hybrid, water-based leave-in. Apply only to mid-shaft and ends (not roots) to preserve volume.
Am I wavy or just have wavy hair?
If your hair forms an S-pattern wave when air-dried, you're type 2 wavy. Many people with 'wavy' hair are actually 2A-2C with potential for more defined waves with correct products. Try a curl-friendly routine for 4 weeks to see your true pattern.
Why does my hair look limp after using a curl product?
Almost always heavy product weight. Wavies need lightweight products — try cutting amount in half. Switch from curl cream to mousse. Skip heavy oils and butters.
Best UK 2A vs 2B vs 2C products?
2A: lightest (mousse only), Innersense I Create Volume. 2B: light cream-gel hybrid, Bounce Curl Light Creme Gel. 2C: cream + gel layered, Bounce Curl Defining Curl Creme + Curl Keeper Original Gel.
Will wavies need to deep condition?
Yes — weekly minimum, but with lighter masks than type 3-4. Try Innersense Hydrating Cream Conditioner or Garnier Fructis Hair Food Banana mask for waves. Use without heat (or short heat times).
How long do wavy hair routines last?
3-5 days between full wash days. Pineapple, satin sleep, and morning refresh keep waves intact through the week.
Will my waves change with age?
Yes — hormonal shifts (pregnancy, menopause), hair density changes, and porosity drift change wave pattern over years. Most pattern changes are reversible with proper care; some are permanent (chemical processing, severe heat damage).
Best UK wavy routine for fine hair?
Lightweight products only: Innersense I Create Volume mousse, Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave-in spray. Air-dry to avoid disturbing fine waves. Pineapple at night.
Should wavies use a deep conditioner mask?
Yes weekly. Use shorter mask times (10-15 min vs 30 min for type 3-4). Wavy hair doesn't need extended deep conditioning under heat — risks over-conditioning (limp, mushy).
Best UK wavy routine for high porosity?
Innersense Hydrating Cream Hairbath + Curlsmith Multi-Tasking Conditioner. Apply LOC method on damp hair: liquid leave-in, sealing oil drop, light cream-gel. Bond-builder (Curlsmith Bond Rehab) monthly for cuticle reinforcement.
