About 4B Z-pattern coily hair
Type 4B forms Z-pattern coils — sharp angular bends rather than the smooth S-coils of 4A. The bends are tight, frequent, and densely packed. Shrinkage typically 60-75%, with significant pattern compression as hair dries. 4B has the highest cuticle stress per inch of strand — every bend is a potential breakage point — which is why protective styling and gentle handling matter more for 4B than for any looser pattern.
Identifying 4B hair
Pattern: sharp Z-bends, like zigzag with angular corners. Pencil-thin diameter or finer. The angular bends are visible even in single strands when held to light. Densely packed across the head.
Compare with 4A (smooth S-coils, curvy not angular) and 4C (so tightly compressed the Z-pattern is barely visible without stretching). 4B sits between them — the Z is unmistakable, but you can still see it without significant stretching.
What 4B hair needs
Heavy butter-based stylers, intensive moisture systems, layered LOC method. The cuticle is exposed at every Z-bend, so cuticle protection through sealing oils is critical. Weekly bond-building (Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab, Olaplex) reduces breakage at bend points.
Protective styles preserve 4B length and reduce manipulation breakage. Two-strand twists, mini-twists, braids, faux locs, wigs, and bantu knots all work well. Rotate styles every 1-2 weeks to avoid persistent tension on the same areas.
The 4B wash-day routine
Pre-poo with warm oil 30 minutes before shampoo. Cleanse with a sulphate-free shampoo every 7-10 days. Deep condition under heat for 30 minutes weekly — heat cap, hooded dryer, or plastic cap with body heat. Detangle in conditioner with fingers, then wide-tooth comb.
Apply leave-in to soaking-wet hair, follow with sealing oil, then a heavy butter or curl custard. Section into 4-6 parts for thorough distribution. Style stretched (two-strand twists, braid-outs) for the best length retention.
Single-strand knots and breakage prevention
Single-strand knots (SSKs, also called fairy knots) form when the tight Z-pattern coils a single strand back on itself, creating a knot mid-strand. The knot becomes a snag point during detangling — pulled, it breaks the hair.
Prevention: stretching styles (twist-outs, braid-outs) keep strands stretched and reduce coiling. Finger-detangle first, then comb. Slip-rich conditioner during detangling. Trim every 8-12 weeks to remove SSKs before they accumulate.
UK 4B-specific care
Hard-water UK regions need monthly chelating clarifying — calcium binds to 4B's exposed cuticle even faster than other patterns. Chlorinated pool water (1-3 ppm in UK public pools) oxidises the cuticle; pre-rinse with tap water before swimming, and rinse thoroughly after.
UK winter: heavier moisture layers, weekly steam treatments, sealing with heavier oils (castor, JBCO). UK summer: still need moisture, but humidity helps — the higher dew point pulls water into the strand.

4B Z-pattern coil care
Type 4B is densely-packed with Z-pattern (zig-zag) coils — sharper angles than 4A's smooth S-coils. The coil itself is tight as a pencil. 4B has the highest shrinkage of any type 3-4 hair: 75% or more. True length is dramatically longer than air-dried length.
4B-specific challenge: tangling. The Z-pattern coils interlock with neighbouring coils as the hair dries, creating knots. Twist-styling and braid-outs prevent tangling while drying. Detangling must happen in conditioner with a wide-tooth comb, in 4-6 sections.
Moisture retention for 4B
Bonneted heat-deep-conditioning weekly is non-negotiable for 4B health. Apply mask, cover with plastic cap, then a microfibre warming cap or hooded dryer for 20-30 minutes. The heat opens the cuticle and pushes conditioner into the cortex. Cold-water rinse to seal.
