High porosity hair has a raised cuticle — absorbs water fast, loses it just as fast. The strategy is heavy hydration and sealing.

About high-porosity curl products UK
High-porosity hair has raised cuticles that absorb moisture quickly — and lose it just as fast. Often caused by chemical processing, heat damage, or genetic curl pattern. This collection brings together heavy-duty deep conditioners, bond-builders, sealing oils, and layered-moisture products formulated specifically for high-porosity needs.
What high porosity is
Porosity is your hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture — controlled by the cuticle, the outermost layer of overlapping scales on each strand. High porosity = raised cuticle scales. Water and product enter the shaft easily and exit just as easily. Hair feels good wet, dry by lunchtime.
Float test: clean, oil-free strand drops in room-temperature water. Sinks immediately = high porosity. Sinks slowly to middle = normal. Floats = low porosity.
What causes high porosity
Chemical processing: bleach, high-lift colour, relaxers. The most common cause. Once chemically processed, hair is permanently more porous until it grows out.
Heat damage: temperatures above 160°C denature the cuticle and raise porosity. Cumulative — every heat session adds to the damage.
UV exposure: oxidises the cuticle over years. Worst in summer.
Mineral build-up: calcium and magnesium ions in hard water progressively damage the cuticle in London/SE/Anglia UK regions.
Genetic: some hair is naturally higher-porosity. Type 4c hair is genetically more porous than type 2 hair (more cuticle bends = more exposed cuticle).
The high-porosity routine
LOC method on damp hair (Liquid → Oil → Cream). Oil seals the raised cuticle quickly before moisture escapes. Bond-builder weekly (Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab) to rebuild cuticle integrity over weeks. Sealing oils (jojoba, argan, sweet almond). Heavy moisture mask weekly (SheaMoisture Raw Shea Deep Treatment, Camille Rose Algae Renew).
Cool-water final rinse seals the cuticle flat. Apple cider vinegar rinse monthly smooths the cuticle. Reduce heat styling — heat is high porosity's worst enemy.
All products in this collection are screened for high-porosity performance — sealing, bond-building, layered moisture. Free UK delivery over £25.
Diagnosing high porosity
The float test: drop a clean shed strand in a glass of water. Sinks immediately = high porosity (cuticle is open, water enters fast). Floats indefinitely = low porosity. Sinks slowly = medium. Most damaged or chemically-treated hair is high porosity. Most type 4 hair is naturally medium-to-high.
High-porosity signs without the float test: hair absorbs water and product quickly, dries fast, feels dry within hours of washing, frizzes in humidity. Bond-building treatments (Curlsmith Bond Rehab, Olaplex) reduce porosity by repairing the cuticle gaps that cause it.
LOC method specifics for high porosity
Liquid → Oil → Cream. For high porosity. Apply liquid leave-in to soaking-wet hair. Apply sealing oil (jojoba, argan, sweet almond) to lock moisture in. Apply cream/butter on top to add hold and styling. The oil layer is critical — without it, moisture escapes the open cuticle within hours.
