About Ecoslay UK

Ecoslay is the small-batch, vegan, plant-based curl-care line founded by chemist Carmen Ferreira-Roberts in Atlanta, Georgia in 2017. Every formula is hand-mixed in small batches with food-grade botanical ingredients — no parabens, no sulphates, no silicones, no synthetic preservatives in the heaviest formulations.

Founder story

Carmen Ferreira-Roberts is a Brazilian-American cosmetic chemist who started Ecoslay from her Atlanta kitchen. The brand grew from local farmer's market sales to becoming one of the most-recognised clean-beauty curl lines in the US natural-hair community, stocked in major UK retailers including Zenvy.

Carmen formulates with food-grade ingredients first — flax seed, hibiscus, banana, rice, oats, coconut water, marshmallow root. The product naming reflects the ingredient focus: Orange Marmalade (flax-based), Banana Cream (banana + coconut), Rice Pudding (rice protein), Chai Latte (cinnamon + cardamom).

The Ecoslay range at Zenvy

Orange Marmalade Curl Definer — flax-seed gel with maximum hold, cult favourite. Jello Shot — defining curl jelly. Banana Cream Deep Conditioner — weekly moisture mask. Rice Pudding Leave-In — protein-rich leave-in for damaged hair.

Matcha Boost — strengthening mist for between washes. Chai Latte — cleansing co-wash. Ginger and Moringa Tea — scalp-stimulating tonic. Peppermint Schnapps — sulphate-free shampoo. Moonshine Hair & Body Oil — multi-use sealing oil. Lemon Buttercream — heavy moisture butter.

Who Ecoslay is for

Curlies seeking clean-beauty, food-grade ingredients with verifiable supply chains. Type 3 and 4 curls across porosity spectrum. Anyone with sensitivity to synthetic preservatives, parabens, or silicones.

Refrigeration note: Some Ecoslay formulas are sold in refill pouches that benefit from cool storage to extend shelf life (preservative-free, so faster oxidation). UK stock has been formulated for ambient storage but storing in a cool spot away from sunlight extends shelf life.

Sustainability

Ecoslay uses recyclable packaging across the range, sources organic and fair-trade ingredients where possible, and runs a no-animal-testing policy across the entire supply chain. The small-batch production model minimises waste.

All Ecoslay products at Zenvy ship from UK warehouses. Free UK delivery over £25.

Why Ecoslay is different

Ecoslay (founded by Cassandra Stancell in Atlanta) uses food-grade ingredients — flax seed, okra, marshmallow root, agave. The Orange Marmalade Curl Jam is the brand's flagship — flaxseed-based with no synthetic polymers. It looks like (and almost smells like) actual jam. Apply wet, scrunch, dry. Hold lasts 5-7 days.

Ecoslay's challenge in the UK: short shelf life. Food-grade flaxseed-based gels last 2-3 months from opening (vs 18+ months for polymer-based commercial gels). Store in the fridge. Buy smaller jar sizes if you're a slow user.

Ecoslay product comparisons

Orange Marmalade Curl Jam = strongest hold, most defined curls, food-grade flaxseed. Banana Cream Deep Conditioner = creamy mask for moisture, banana-based. Coconut Castor Cream = lightest leave-in moisturiser. The three together give a complete CG-friendly routine for £45-50.

Ecoslay FAQs

Is Ecoslay 100% vegan?
Yes — every Ecoslay product is vegan and cruelty-free. The brand uses food-grade botanical ingredients exclusively.
Why are some Ecoslay formulas refrigerated?
Preservative-free or low-preservative formulas benefit from cool storage to extend shelf life. UK stock has been adjusted for ambient storage. Keep in a cool spot away from direct sunlight.
How long do Ecoslay products keep?
Most Ecoslay formulas keep 6-9 months from manufacture once opened, given limited synthetic preservatives. Store cool, keep lid sealed, use a clean scoop or pump for jars.
Which Ecoslay product is best for first-timers?
Orange Marmalade Curl Definer — flax-based gel that defines without crunch, works across type 2 through type 4, and is the most-loved cult hero of the range.
Is Ecoslay curly-girl method approved?
Yes — every Ecoslay product is sulphate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free, and CGM-compatible.
What's the difference between Orange Marmalade and Jello Shot?
Orange Marmalade is the heavier flax-gel for maximum hold and definition. Jello Shot is lighter, better for fine hair or 2C-3A wanting softer definition.
Best Ecoslay product for type 4 hair?
Lemon Buttercream (heavy moisture butter), Banana Cream Deep Conditioner (weekly moisture mask), and Moonshine Hair & Body Oil (sealing) are the type 4 essentials from the range.
Is Ecoslay safe for colour-treated hair?
Yes — sulphate-free and silicone-free, colour-safe. The Banana Cream Deep Conditioner is particularly recommended for colour-treated hair.
Can I use Ecoslay if I'm sensitive to fragrance?
Most Ecoslay products use natural essential oils for fragrance (mint, citrus, herbal). Check individual product ingredient lists for specific allergens. Fragrance-free is not a current option.
How does Ecoslay compare to Curlsmith?
Both are clean-beauty curl-care, but different formulation philosophies. Ecoslay uses food-grade hand-mixed botanicals (vegan, often refrigerated). Curlsmith uses laboratory-formulated bond-builders and protein-moisture science. Ecoslay suits ingredient-first shoppers; Curlsmith suits performance-first shoppers.
Best UK Ecoslay starter kit under £40?
Orange Marmalade Curl Definer (£15) + Banana Cream Deep Conditioner (£12) + Rice Pudding Leave-In (£13) = £40 covers leave-in, styler, weekly mask.
Does Ecoslay Orange Marmalade really expire fast?
Yes — 2-3 months from opening due to natural ingredients. Refrigerate after opening to extend to 4 months. Sniff-test before use; sour smell = compost.
Best UK pairing for Orange Marmalade?
Ecoslay Coconut Castor Cream leave-in underneath, then Orange Marmalade for hold. Or Curlsmith Curl Defining Styling Souffle as a cream layer.
Will Orange Marmalade work in UK humidity?
Yes for 60-75% RH. At higher humidity (UK summer), layer The Doux Silent Treatment on top for added polymer-resistance.
Is Ecoslay vegan and cruelty-free?
Yes — fully. All food-grade plant ingredients. Cassandra Stancell built the brand around 'ingredients you can pronounce'.
Why does Ecoslay cost more than supermarket brands?
Food-grade ingredients (not synthetic) cost more to source and have shorter shelf lives. Many curlies find one bottle outlasts cheaper alternatives because hold is stronger per application.
Best UK Ecoslay starter kit?
Orange Marmalade Curl Jam (£18) + Coconut Castor Cream (£15) = £33 covers daily styling. Add Banana Cream Mask (£18) for weekly deep conditioning.
